Amir Khan has his sights set on a fight with Floyd Mayweather and believes a shot at Devon Alexander is a step in the right direction.

Khan and his team have yet to convince IBF Welterweight champion Alexander to take him on and has insisted he is prepared to fight in America to get the bout the green light.
The Briton is looking to win a world title in a bid to attract a fight with Mayweather and is urging Alexander to sign up for a fight, pencilled in for December.
"We are looking at December 7 for my next fight and looking at opponents," said Khan.
"I have tried to get Devon Alexander. It was looking promising. He said he wanted to fight at the start and now it slowly seems that he is not 100 per cent sure about it, coming up with excuses.
"Even if it's not in Dubai, I will fight him in America, I will fight him wherever. It's all about moving to that big fight against Mayweather," Khan added.
"Hopefully getting this win against Alexander will get me into that fight."
Khan went on to explain that he is stepping up his training regime in San Francisco with coach Virgil Hunter as he looks to bounce back to the big time following his world title loss to Danny Garcia.

Unite union members accept Haddington Road deal

The Unite union has voted to accept the Haddington Road agreement.

The union, which represents around 6,000 workers, re-balloted its members on the deal, and it was approved by 82% of voters.

Jimmy Kelly from Unite said that the result will do little to improve the country's economic situation, but says members would be seriously disadvantaged if they do not sign up to the proposals.

California prison hospital official on leave

The Department of State Hospitals' chief deputy director, the face of a controversial mental health program in Salinas Valley State Prison, is on extended leave.

In an email distributed to the staff statewide Monday, department director Cliff Allenby announced that "due to unforeseen circumstances, Chief Deputy Director Kathy Gaither will be out of the office for an extended period of time."

The department did not disclose the reason for Gaither's departure, or even acknowledge it earlier this week.

The announcement follows a federal court order to investigate complaints of dangerously low staffing levels at the department's mental health unit inside the prison in Soledad ? allegations Gaither denied in recent court testimony.

There have been two inmate deaths in the past year at a program that saw none in the previous 10 years and was once the pride of the state's prison mental health system.

Staffers at the unit say there is an ongoing shortage of soap and clean clothes and sheets, and that psychiatric and nursing staff levels remain dangerously low.

One psychiatrist has testified that he and others were pressured to discharge patients early because of court orders to reduce waiting lists, an allegation Gaither also denied at her recent court appearance in a long-running federal case about California prison mental health care.

The same week as Gaither's testimony, The Herald published a January 2012 memo from a DSH administrator telling Salinas Valley staffers that the department wanted the staff to limit patient stays to less than nine months, and that "we are being reported as barriers ... by not moving patients in a timely manner to reduce the waitlist."

The department said it "has no such policy to discharge patients at nine months, or any set time period. Nor did we have such a policy or direction in January of 2012."

Allenby said in this week's email that all employee communication intended for Gaither should now be sent to him.

For some reason, Allenby's announcement Monday of the news about Gaither was not delivered to the Salinas Valley program's staff, who received an apologetic email Wednesday saying department officials were looking into why the prison unit's staff members were left off the mailing list.

Gaither is no newcomer to state politics. She worked nearly 20 years at the Department of Finance and then for the Cal State University system before she was appointed Undersecretary of Education by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2009.

In January 2012, the California Senate confirmed her appointment by Gov. Jerry Brown as deputy director of the state hospitals department, which at the time was called the Department of Mental Health, where she had been acting deputy director since 2011.

Gaither's leave comes after a sweeping overhaul of the Salinas Valley unit's administration, including replacing its Executive Director Charles DaSilva.

Salinas Valley's patient care and psychiatrist staffing levels remain a key issue in the federal lawsuit after nine psychiatrists wrote letters to DaSilva in January, saying they were working "under protest" because of unsafe working conditions.

Last week, Judge Lawrence Karlton ordered a federal special master to investigate the program and report his findings in 75 days.

BOSTON (AP) ? Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi barely scratched the surface of his long criminal relationship with James "Whitey" Bulger as he began what is expected to be hours of testimony against Bulger at his racketeering trial.

During his brief, 15 minutes of testimony Thursday, Flemmi said both he and Bulger were partners in the Winter Hill Gang, a violent Irish mob. He also said he and Bulger were longtime FBI informants who squealed on the rival Mafia as well as assorted criminals in South Boston.

But court recessed for the day before prosecutors had a chance to ask Flemmi about Bulger's role in numerous killings Bulger is accused of orchestrating or committing.

Flemmi is due back on the witness stand Friday.

As court ended Thursday, the 79-year-old Flemmi, with his hands on his hips, glared at Bulger as he waited to be taken away by federal marshals. The two men then snarled what sounded like obscenities at each other.

It was their first meeting in nearly two decades.

Flemmi said he hasn't seen Bulger since about a week before Christmas in 1994. That was when they got tipped off by John Connolly, their former FBI handler, that they were about to be indicted.

Bulger fled Boston and was one of the nation's most-wanted fugitives for more than 16 years until he was captured in Santa Monica, Calif., in 2011.

Flemmi was arrested and has been in prison ever since.

Flemmi said he was with Bulger and heard him give information to Connolly "hundreds of times" over 15 years.

"Who did most of the talking at these meetings?" prosecutor Fred Wyshak asked.

"James Bulger," Flemmi replied.

That comment seemed to rankle Bulger, who insists that he was never an informant and told people that being a "rat" was the worst thing anyone could do, according to testimony.

Prosecutors said Bulger and Flemmi ran the Winter Hill Gang for more than 20 years, making millions by extorting drug dealers, bookmakers and loan sharks.

Bulger is accused of participating in 19 killings during the 1970s and '80s. Flemmi pleaded guilty to 10 killings, extortion, drug distribution and other charges. He is serving a life sentence.

Before Flemmi took the stand Thursday, word spread through the courtroom that a former Boston liquor store owner who had hoped to testify against Bulger and openly despised him had been found dead. Authorities said a jogger discovered the body of 59-year-old Stephen "Stippo" Rakes in the woods along a street Wednesday in Lincoln, Mass.

Prosecutors said an autopsy Thursday found no signs of trauma. Investigators trying to establish the cause of death were awaiting toxicology results.

Bulger is accused of forcing Rakes and his former wife to sell their store in 1984 to use as a headquarters for his gang and as a source of legitimate income.

Kevin Weeks, Bulger's former protege, gave a differing account when he testified last week. Weeks said Rakes wanted to sell the store, agreed to a price and then tried to increase that price.

Friends said Rakes was eager to testify against Bulger.

"The day I see him in a box, not breathing, will be better," Rakes told The Associated Press in April.

But it appeared earlier this week that prosecutors had decided not to call Rakes as a witness after all. When they listed their remaining witnesses for the judge, Rakes was not among them.

Chinese Factories Build Troubled Relationships

China's new generation of migrant workers has been the driving force behind the country's rapid urbanization, but while the 240 million-strong workforce has aspirations for an urban lifestyle, they struggle to balance demanding jobs and family relationships. And they hesitate to call the city "home."

For his project, 'Love on the Assembly Line' photographer Jia Daitengfei documented the lives of several young suburban Shanghai factory workers -- most of whom were born after 1990. A few days before Valentine's Day, he asked them how difficult it was to maintain a relationship. He then returned six months later to see how each worker's lives had changed.

According to the South China Morning Post, China's migrant workers feel like "outsiders," despite working in a city for years. As non-local residents, migrant workers don't have access to affordable housing and certain basic needs. Reuters also reported a slowdown in the average monthly wage for migrant workers, dropping from 21.2 percent in 2011 to 11.8 percent in 2012. And with 60 percent of the workforce born after 1980, the low wages and long hours also limit oppportunities for young workers to make romantic connections.

"[Young migrant workers] feel they are at the bottom of the society and lack security," Daitengfei said, "but they hope to make their own efforts to gain a foothold in the city and live a decent life."

Daitengfei was taken aback because most of the workers he initially interviewed were already partnered.

"It was amazing because there was a pop word in China now called 'leftover singles,' which means men and women who remained singled in their 30s," he said. "But those neotenous workers had fallen in love, got married and had kids at such a young age."

Daitengfei said rural Chinese culture pressures young workers to marry early, without careful thinking. Having a boyfriend or girlfriend, much less a family, can be financially demanding for a migrant worker living in a mainland city. Reuters reported that Chinese migrant workers earn about 1,748 Chinese yuan ($277) a month, which is half the average urban salary.

Also, paying for housing on that salary proves difficult, Daitengfei said, which is why a few of the married couples he interviewed couldn't afford to raise their children on their own. They sent their children back to the countryside to live with their parents. According to the Morning Post, one of the main sources of happiness for migrant workers was close proximity to their children.

And although senior leaders have promised to look after their welfare, migrant workers face a rigid household registration system -- known as 'Hukou' -- that denies them access to social benefits such as health care, unemployment and access to better local schools for their children. Daitengfei said the government is slow to act to safeguard migrant workers' rights and interests.

With all that in mind, six months later, Daitengfei returned to stories of separated families, love lost and loneliness. But why shoot wedding portraits in an environment that reminds these workers of their alienation?

For one, Daitengfei said it was a matter of convenience. Factory workers couldn't devote too much time away from the factory. Otherwise, it would have affected their hourly pay. And since wedding portraits are too expensive for a migrant worker's salary, Daitengfei shot them for free. Ultimately, Daitengfei saw the factory as the perfect setting for lives that are "like products on the assembly line."

Amid urban estrangement, "the young migrant workers see marriage just like a mission," Daitengfei said, making some of life's more important decisions in such a short time.

But Daitengfei hopes that the photos also reveal a better understanding about their dreams. On Valentine's Day he gifted the photos to the workers.

"I still remember their smiles clearly now," he said.
