But once the Irish sophomore wide receiver picked himself up after being tackled for the first time in 48 days, he was awash in normalcy.
?It was almost like a confidence boost,? he said Saturday.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound sophomore finished the regular season as ND?s fourth-leading receiver (25 receptions for 375 yards), despite missing the final 2? games with a broken collarbone suffered at Boston College on Nov. 10.
More telling than those numbers is how he stretches opposing defenses, as his 15-yards-per-catch average ? best among ND?s top five pass catchers ? suggests.
And Daniels knows that.
He also knows that if ND were playing in just about any other postseason game, he?d been questionable at best, if not completely unavailable. The Irish, for instance, played their bowl game on Dec. 29 last season. Daniels? first day of contact practice since the injury was Dec. 28.
?When I broke (the collarbone), I didn?t even know what I had done,? he said. ?I just knew it was bad. It was difficult, because I didn?t know at first if I?d be able to come back. I was just hoping I?d be in this position.?
He?ll be welcomed back into action by a team that ranks first nationally in total defense and second only to the Irish in scoring D.
?We would not put him out there unless he was free from injury,? Kelly said. ?Now he practiced the last three weeks, but in a red jersey. We just didn?t want any contact. I usually don?t put jerseys on guys, but I wanted him?to be involved in all the timing work, but nobody could touch him.
?Now, he?s out of the red jersey. He?s good to go out and play, jump, get hit, fall down. He?s a really good player who understands his reps are going to be based upon how he practices and how he performs. I?m certain that he?ll play a role in the game.?
Personnel matters
But as Collinsworth recovered from June shoulder surgery that effectively wiped out his 2012 season, he began to experience back discomfort.
The day before the Irish closed the regular season Nov. 24 at USC, Collinsworth underwent back surgery, Kelly revealed Saturday.
?It?s similar to what (tight end Tyler) Eifert had,? Kelly said. ?He needed that attended to. He feels great, so we think we?ve got him put back together, and he?s champing at the bit.?
Collinsworth, a possible starter for 2013 who will potentially have two seasons of eligibility left, is expected to be full-go in the spring, per Kelly.

Love them union thugs -- not even houses of worship are sacred to them if they aren't getting their cut of the construction costs. This little escapade is likely to add half-a-million dollars to the construction of the church.
The site where Chestnut Hill Friends Meeting is building a new meetinghouse was damaged by arsonists during Christmas week, and police are now "absolutely" sure the attack was the result of a dispute between members of a Philadelphia construction union and the project's nonunion contractor.Although no suspects have been identified in the Dec. 21 incident, Lt. George McClay of Northwest Detectives said Friday that he was certain the small Quaker building on East Mermaid Lane was targeted because it is being built with nonunion labor.
"I absolutely think it is a union issue," McClay said.
Given the long history of organized criminal activity by unions, the time has come for a national right-to-work law to protect workers -- and the American people as a whole -- from these violent criminals.

I learned a lot about negotiation at Harvard Business School. I took classes from Max Bazerman (for my money, the best in the business) and John S. Hammond (no slouch either, one single insight he gave me has paid dividends for decades).
We did a lot of work on taking some of the more emotional, lizard-brain elements out of negotiating. We did a lot of work on expanding the pie (creating of new value) before any divvying up (claiming of value). The more you learn about expanding the pie, the more you find that there is always a better deal to be had for both sides.
I have yet to encounter a deal where more value can?t be created. But in order for this approach to work, both sides need to be willing to try to create more value first. Sometimes, one or both sides let a scarcity mindset and fear overrule the better decision of first creating value.
Here?s what I notice, especially as this pertains to politics and very often sales.
In order to be an effective negotiator, you must allow your partner to capture and claim some of the value that is being created and negotiated for. If you are the only one that can win, it?s very difficult to come to a deal. That?s because no one can accept a win-lose deal. You can?t. They can?t.
The more you try ensure that your partner in a negotiation can capture some of the value being created, the easier you make it for them to say, ?yes,? because they have their win. If they can claim that they ended up with a good deal to their stakeholders, then you make it easier still.
When grown ups sit down to negotiate, this is how both sides operate. When children sit down to negotiate, both sides are too busy trying to capture and claim value to ever come to an agreement. They quickly get to lose-win or win-lose, depending on which side of the table you?re sitting on.
If there is no way the person with whom you are negotiating is allowed to walk away with a win, then you are a poor negotiator.
Do your negotiations improve by you or your partner behaving as adversaries?
How might your results be improved if you approached every negotiation as if it were a problem solving exercise instead of an adversarial interaction?
How do you expand the pie in the deals that you create?
Have you ever had to negotiate with a client that was only interested in capturing and claiming value? How?d you deal with that client?

Died wretched, buried with a million naira casket is the saga of a rich fool in a home video entitled, Died Wretched. The flick produced by one of Nollywood?s pioneer producers, Chief Kenneth Nnebue of NEK Videos captures the folly of a young but rich man who watched his uncle and mentor die in penury but turned around to throw a lavish funeral for him.
The above scenario has been the lot of many Nigerian artistes who often die in poverty after giving all they have to their fatherland. Many actors, most especially, the veterans seem to suffer this fate. Legendary playwright, William Shakespeare in his classic, Macbeth describes this set of people, as ?poor players who strut and fret their hours upon the stage, and were heard no more?. This is pitiable because these actors toil to put smiles on the faces of Nigerians but at the end of the day, have little to show for it. In a country where corruption thrives, the inspirational line in the national anthem that says, ?the labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain? is inconsequential. The case of top actor, Enebeli Elebuwa of ?Andrew must check out? fame brings to mind how a nation dumps her heroes when they are needed most.
Here was an actor who inspired patriotism by urging Nigerians to stay back home and salvage the country only to be devoured by the very system he laboured to preserve. Although, ?Andrew? refused to check out in his prime, cruel fate eventually showed him the exit door. For several months, Elebuwa was bedridden and incapacitated by stroke in Lagos. In spite of several appeals for financial assistance to enable the ailing actor seek better treatment overseas; help was not forthcoming.
His continued battle with the debilitating ailment took him to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, from where he was eventually flown to India where he died a few weeks ago. Elebuwa?s death was a culmination of a nation?s insensitivity to the plight of her patriots. Another sad story of a country?s penchant for trifling with the lives of its heroes was that of late James Iroha aka Gringory of the rested TV comedy series, the New Masquerade. Early in the year, Iroha, 71, died in his village, Amaokwe Item in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State after repeated calls for financial assistance were unheeded by government.
His demise only reaffirmed that members of the creative community have become endangered species in contemporary Nigeria. Iroha, who created and directed the TV drama that ran for several years on national television, incidentally was the third among the major cast to pay the supreme price lately. Before then, Claudius Eke, (Jegede Sokoya) and his cantankerous wife, Apena (Christy Essien Igbokwe), died in 2006 and 2011 respectively. While Eke died of chronic diabetes, the acclaimed lady of songs passed away after a brief illness.
Even though, the likes of Iroha, Christy Essien-Igbokwe, Sam Loco Efe and Wale Ogunyemi were decorated with national honours, the awards did not put food on their tables. Chief Chika Okpalla popularly known as Chief Zebrudaya Okoroigwe Nwogbo alias 4.30, also of the New Masquerade fame, a garrulous individual, famous for his clumsy grammar, in his appraisal of his national honour once told The Sun in an interview: ?I?m MON without the EY?. The tragic fate of some of Nigeria?s creative talents brings to the fore some nagging questions: What are the lives of Nigerian artistes actually worth? Are they only good for airport receptions, entertainment of guests at social functions, and after that heard no more? TS Weekend recalls the sordid tales of some stars of yesteryears who died in distress.
They include Joe Layode aka Mr. Garuba of the Village Headmaster fame, Wale Ogunyemi, renowned playwright and dramatist, James Iroha aka Gringory, veteran actor, Sam Loco-Efe, actress, Remi Abiola, Laide Adewale, Francis Agu, and Pati Obasi among others.
Excerpts:
James Iroha (Gringory) Shortly before his death in February this year, James Iroha had sent a save-our-soul to Nigerians over his health and financial conditions. The newspapers were awash with stories of his deteriorating health and his inability to pay his medical bills. At the time, the 1966 graduate of the University of Ibadan was visually impaired. He needed to undergo operations for glaucoma affliction but help did not come. Iroha, who alongside Clarus (who is also currently visually impaired) entertained Nigerians with their roles as clumsy house-helps in Chief Zebrudaya?s house in The New Masquerade, was denied help by Nigerians. In spite of his many cries, nobody cared a hoot. He once told reporters:??There?s nothing between poverty and I; I?m nose-to-nose with poverty?.? Iroha eventually died unsung in his hometown, Item, Abia State. Claudius Eke (Jegede Sokoya) As if the New Masquerade cast were plagued by despicable fate, Iroha?s acolyte and support cast in the popular TV series, Eke, succumbed to chronic diabetes some years back. Like his compatriot, Eke was literally living from hand to mouth in his later years. Following the resting the New Masquerade, which gave him fame without cash, Eke?s calls for help when he took ill got no response until his death.
Joe Layode (Garuba) Until his death on December 9, 2006, at 78, Joe Layode aka Garuba of the Village Headmaster fame ruled the airwaves like a colossus in the ?70s and ?80s. However,?at his old age, the garrulous no-nonsense teacher in Oja Primary School was a recluse. He was holed up in his flat in Iba Housing Estate where he lived with one of his daughters. Although, he told this reporter during an encounter that he engaged in script writing and rendered consultancy services to younger artistes, the jobs were inadequate to put food on his table. In order to put body and soul together, Garuba joined the home video bandwagon, which saw him featuring in flicks like King of Money, Oracle, and Sango. From all indications, Layode was embittered by the nation he once gave his all.?He hardly interacted with neighbours and if he had cause to go out, he did that under the cover of darkness.
He would not even open his door for journalists if only to underscore his resentment for the society and its people. Layode finally gave up the ghost in December 2006 and was buried without fanfare. Wale Ogunyemi (MON) Award-winning playwright and actor, Wale Ogunyemi broke into television in the ?70s with plays like The Vow, Are Akogun (a Yoruba adaptation of William Shakespeare?s Macbeth) (1969), Ijaye War (1970), Kiriji War, and The Divorce (1977). Ogunyemi, who was born in Igbajo, Osun State in 1939, will always be remembered for writing Langbodo, Nigeria?s drama entry for FECTAC 77.?At the time he appeared in Professor Wole Soyinka?s King Baabu, little did he know that his ailing health could not sustain a world tour of the political drama. He took ill shortly after and died on December 2001 after a brief illness. He was 62.
Sam Loco
Efe Sam Loco shot into the limelight way back in 1977 when he played the lead role, Akaraogun, in Wale Ogunyemi?s Langbodo. Renowned theatre scholar and director, Professor Dapo Adelugba, directed the drama. The performance was adjudged the best during the festival. Although, Sam was listed in Nigeria?s Movie Hall of Fame and bagged a national award, but typical of such honours, they lack financial backing. Sam Loco-Efe,?who died at 69, only breathed the air of financial freedom with the boom of Nollywood. But what measure of success could be ascribed to a composite artiste who for four decades bestrode Nigeria?s entertainment landscape like a colossus? Sam Loco?s fame and popularity not withstanding, he died a struggling man last year. He was shooting a film in Owerri, Imo State when he slumped and died in a hotel room. Harry Mosco The death of pop legend, Harry Mosco on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 in Egypt where he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment came on the heels of the demise of James Iroha.
Meanwhile, his passage differed slightly from those of his colleagues considering the circumstances. Although, distraught at the latter part of his life, Mosco who led the wave-making Funkies Band in the ?70s and ?80s, was heart-broken when his heartthrob, Edugie dumped him for renowned politician and businessman, Arthur Nzeribe. The musician never recovered from the shock as he was literally pronounced dead long before his death.
However, his career had started witnessing a downturn by the time the politician came into the picture. Deserted and lonely, Mosco?s life came crashing when he could not send his kids to school which left him with no option than to allow his estranged wife take custody of the children. He was reportedly shattered by the trend of events such that attempts to re-launch his music career failed.?The Sugarcane Baby and Country Boy singer, who was resident in Akute, a border community between Lagos and?Ogun States, fell ill before help came through his son who flew him to Cairo, Egypt, for treatment where he died. Remi Abiola Her name gave her away as one of the many wives of the business mogul,?the late Chief M.K.O Abiola.
She was a popular face in the Yoruba genre of Nollywood, notably for her motherly roles. The mother of one who lived in Jakande Estate, Ipaja, Lagos State, before she relocated to the United States in 2008 reportedly died of lung cancer on July 29, of the following year. She was aged 56. Perhaps, if Nigeria had smiled on the talented actress, she wouldn?t have relocated to the US at the time she did. Abiola had to square up to the challenges of settling down to a new life as an immigrant, which compelled her to take up a menial job. She was at work when she slumped and went into coma. The actress was rushed to the hospital but she did not make it.
Francis Agu Prior to his death on March 20, 2007, Francis Agu, a suave actor, belonged to the first generation of Nollywood actors who made their marks in the industry. He, alongside the likes Kanayo O. Kanayo (KOK), Kenneth Okonkwo, Charles Okafor, and Bob-Manuel Udokwu?featured in Living In Bondage, the chart buster movie produced by Chief Kenneth Nnebue in the early 1990s. Before then, he was a popular face on Checkmate, a famous sit-com produced by Amaka Igwe also in the early 1990s. Agu suddenly disappeared from the scene at the turn the century only for his fans to learn about his ailing health later. Initially, he was hospitalised in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital. Unfortunately, his health condition did not attract any noise such as to attract financial assistance for better medical treatment.
By the time he was transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in 2006, his condition had worsened. With little financial aid forthcoming, the actor eventually passed away in 2007.
Pati Obasi Remember him? Pati Obasi of the Mammy Water fame. For sometime the gospel singer has been down with renal failure without help coming from nowhere. He passed away last month in Enugu and he?s yet to be buried. Davies Ofor and James Uche It is not enough to roll out the drums after these stars are gone when much can be done while they are alive. Iroha?s screen partner, Davies Ofor (Clarus) has been blind for 10 years in Aba, Abia State. Another?actor, Prince James Uche, has been bedridden for more than a year also in Abia State. Isn?t it time for the Abia State government and public-spirited Nigerians to come to their aid and save their lives?

Carl Stubbs, center, the principal of Valley View Elementary School in Pleasant Grove, Utah, looks on with other teachers during concealed-weapons training on Thursday.
By Reuters
Kasey Hansen, a special education teacher from Salt Lake City, Utah, says she would take a bullet for any of her students, but if faced with a gunman threatening her class, she would rather be able to shoot back.
On Thursday, she was one of 200 Utah teachers who flocked to an indoor sports arena for free instruction in the handling of firearms by gun activists who say armed educators might have a chance of thwarting deadly shooting rampages in their schools.
The event was organized by the Utah Shooting Sports Council in response to the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., this month that killed 20 children and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
The council said it has typically attracted about 16 teachers each year to its concealed-carry training courses. But Thursday's event near Salt Lake City, organized especially for educators in the aftermath of Newtown, drew interest from hundreds, and the class was capped at 200 because of space limitations.
"I feel like I would take a bullet for any student in the school district," Hansen, who teaches in a Salt Lake City school district, told Reuters after the training session.
"If we should ever face a shooter like the one in Connecticut, I'm fully prepared to respond with my firearm," she said, adding that she planned to buy a weapon soon and take it to work.
The Newtown massacre reignited a national debate over gun safety. President Barack Obama signaled his support for reinstating a national ban on assault-style rifles and urged Congress to act. The National Rifle Association has called for posting armed guards at schools and rejected new gun-control measures.
After school massacre, parents' divide deepens on gun control
The National Education Association and a number of school officials criticized the NRA's stance, but it got a warmer reception in some parts of the West, where hunting and guns are prevalent.
Utah is among a handful of states that allow people with concealed-carry licenses to take their weapons onto school property, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
After a controversial press conference last week, NRA head Wayne LaPierre made an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" saying the American people would be "crazy" to not put armed guards in schools. Meanwhile, Newtown, Conn., continues coping with the death of 26 people during the tragic shooting. NBC's Ron Mott report.
In Arizona, Attorney General Tom Horne on Wednesday jumped into the debate over school security with a proposal to allow any school to train and arm its principal or another staff member.
The plan, which was backed by at least three sheriffs, would require approval by the legislature and the state's Republican governor, Jan Brewer.
Clark Aposhian, head of the Utah Shooting Sports Council and a certified firearms instructor, organized the event on Thursday to provide teachers with permits to allow them to carry concealed handguns in the classroom. He waived the usual $50 fee for the course.
NRA chief: If putting armed police in schools is crazy, 'then call me crazy'
"I genuinely felt depressed at how helpless those teachers were and those children were in Newtown," Aposhian said. "It doesn't have to be that way."
The parents of Noah Pozner, 6, who was killed in the tragic shooting ?at Sandy Hook Elementary School, had just laid their son to rest this week, when Noah's uncle says a scammer took to the web, posing as Noah's aunt and requesting donations to her personal Paypal account. NBC's Jeff Rossen reports.
Utah teacher Kerrie Anderson was not about to participate. She is a choir and math instructor at a junior high school near Salt Lake City and said her family is "pro-gun" and uses firearms for sports such as target shooting. But she balks at the notion of carrying a weapon into her classroom.
Guns flood into police buyback programs, though critics have doubts about the idea
"How would I keep that gun safe?" she said. "I wouldn't carry (it) on my person while teaching, where a disgruntled student could overpower me and take it. And if I have it secured in my office, it might not be a viable form of protection."
Gun-control activists have decried moves to arm teachers and said efforts at curbing gun violence in schools should be tied to tightening firearms laws.
PhotoBlog: Buyback in Los Angeles brings in hundreds of guns
"We think it makes a lot more sense to prevent a school shooter from getting the gun in the first place," said Kristen Rand, legislative director for the Violence Policy Center in Washington, D.C.
The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary ranks as the second most deadly school shooting in U.S. history. Police say Adam Lanza, 20, killed his mother before going to the school, where he committed the massacre and shot himself to death.

Automotive News reports a larger number of dealers are scaling back the markup on their finance and insurance products as well as aftermarket service plans in an effort to avoid the ire of regulators. There are no industry numbers on how many dealers use self-imposed caps on how much they can charge their customers for these services, but Automotive News polled dealers in an independent survey. Of those who responded, around two-thirds say they use caps, with two-thirds of those who do attributing the restrictions to ethical concerns. Gouging a customer invariably has a negative impact on store reputation, and dealers aren't keen to encourage an increase in government oversight.
Some dealers can mark up financing and insurance products by 100 percent, but most prefer to use sales volume to boost their bottom line. Doing so builds consistency and credibility among new buyers by eschewing large discounts or markups. Even so, several of the respondents in the AN survey reported record finance and insurance revenue through the third quarter of 2012, with dealers seeing over $1,200 per vehicle.

Any newcomer to the commercial real estate market can benefit from a compilation of hints and tips on the most effective ways to purchase or sell commercial property. Below is a compilation of suggestions that will help anyone interested in a successful commercial real estate venture achieve their goals.
You can find different kinds of brokers. There are agents who only represent tenants and there are full-service brokers who work with both tenants and landlords. Consider hiring a tenant-only broker as he?ll have the most experience in dealing with situations such as yours.
Pay attention to the location of a property. When investing in a property, consider what type of neighborhood it is located in. Look at the growth of areas that are similar. You need to be sure that in five to ten years later, the area will still be growing.
TIP! If you are viewing more than one property, you may wish to create a checklist for each site. Determine which properties initially make the cut, but once you do, let those property owners know.
This is necessary in order to confirm that the terms reflect the rent roll as well as the property?s documentation. If you don?t do this verification, you won?t notice any term not considered by the rent roll, and the pro forma could be changed.
When entering the commercial real estate market, patience is perhaps your best ally. Don?t invest in a hurry. You may soon regret it when the property does not fulfill your goals. Be prepared to wait as much as a year for a suitable property to come available in your area.
TIP! Know your goals for a potential property when you are buying commercial real estate. Will you be utilizing this property for yourself, or do you intend on renting it out? Be sure that you have goals that are specific and clear when you look for commercial property, as this can save you plenty of effort and time.
Ask your real estate broker how they measure success and failure to determine if you have hired the correct one. Ask them how their results are measured. You should be on board with their techniques and strategies. You need to share the same strategies and beliefs as your real estate broker in order to work successfully with them.
Make sure you have everything together for your business when you are going to buy commercial real estate. Make sure you have an idea of the type of office space that you want to work in. If you see your company growing in the future, you should consider buying additional space now while the real estate market is at its lowest, this helps you to save money down the road.
Assess what you need before you look for commercial properties. List all of the features that are necessary for your operations, such as the overall size requirements for your rooms and amount of restrooms required.
TIP! Be sure to have a professional building inspector go through your property before you put it up for sale. Repair any problems that the inspector finds immediately.
Take the time to gain the available knowledge to better recognize an advantageous deal. Those who are pros at real estate can quickly tell a great deal from a bad one. Part of their expert knowledge includes knowing when not to make a deal and preparing an exit strategy to extricate themselves. They can also quickly spot damages needing repair, have the ability to calculate risk and can do the calculations that let them know for sure that their monetary objectives will be fulfilled by the property in question.
Hopefully the information contained in this article will help you to build a foundation of knowledge off which you can grow to profitable heights. While tricky, these tips should have given some good grounding in what you need to know.

Stanford University Medical Center
STANFORD, Calif. A national drug shortage has been linked to a higher rate of relapse among children, teenagers and young adults with Hodgkin lymphoma enrolled in a national clinical trial, according to research led by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Estimated two-year cancer-free survival for patients enrolled in the study fell from 88 to 75 percent after the drug cyclophosphamide was substituted for mechlorethamine for treatment of patients with intermediate- or high-risk Hodgkin lymphoma. The study was launched before the drug shortages began. The change occurred after a mechlorethamine shortage began in 2009. No study patients have died, but those who relapsed received additional intensive therapy that is associated with higher odds for infertility and other health problems later.
An analysis comparing how patients in each group were faring two years after their cancer diagnoses will appear in the Dec. 27 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine. The report provides the first evidence of a drug shortage adversely impacting treatment outcomes in specific patients. St. Jude led the study for a national group that includes the Stanford University School of Medicine and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford; Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children's Hospital; Massachusetts General Hospital; and Maine Medical Center.
In recent years, many patients and caregivers have had their medical care complicated by drug shortages, primarily of generic injectable drugs like mechlorethamine. Mechlorethamine, which has been used in cancer treatment since the 1960s, has only recently become available again.
Cyclophosphamide has been widely used in treatment of both adults and children with Hodgkin lymphoma. Based on earlier studies, the drug was considered a safe and effective alternative to mechlorethamine.
"This is a devastating example of how drug shortages affect patients and why these shortages must be prevented," said Monika Metzger, MD, an associate member of the St. Jude Department of Oncology and the study's principal investigator. "Our results demonstrate that, for many chemotherapy drugs, there are no adequate substitute drugs available."
Past shortages have been resolved in a variety of ways and always before a drug substitution became necessary, said Michael Link, MD, the senior author of the new report. Link is a professor of pediatrics in hematology-oncology at Stanford and a member of the pediatric hematology-oncology service at Packard Children's Hospital. He is also immediate past president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
"This puts a face on the problem of drug shortages and shows that the problem is real, not theoretical. This is about a curative therapy that we were unable to administer because the drug we needed was not available," Link said. "Despite heroic efforts by the drug shortage office of the Food and Drug Administration to solve the shortages of a number of medically necessary drugs, it is clear that patients are still suffering from the unavailability of life-saving drugs. A more systematic solution to the problem is needed."
Amy Billett, MD, a pediatric oncologist at Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Center in Boston, is the paper's other author.
Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer of the lymph system and accounts for about 6 percent of childhood cancers. In the United States, about 90 percent of patients will become long-term survivors. Working as the Pediatric Hodgkin Consortium, in 2002 the five institutions involved in this study adopted a seven-drug chemotherapy regimen that included mechlorethamine for the treatment of high-risk pediatric patients. The goal was to preserve high cure rates, but to reduce the risk of second cancers, infertility and other problems associated with the earlier treatments. In 2006, a parallel study was opened for patients with intermediate-risk disease. The risk categories reflect the extent to which cancer has spread, particularly the number and location of lymph nodes involved, plus the presence of unfavorable symptoms of fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss.
The strategy involved 12 weeks of the seven-drug chemotherapy regimen. Patients also received radiotherapy with the dose based on their response to chemotherapy. When mechlorethamine became unavailable, the protocol was revised to allow the cyclophosphamide substitution.
Outcomes for cancer patients are often measured in terms of cancer-free survival, which is the number of years patients remain free of the disease. When researchers assessed the substitution's impact, they found that estimated disease-free survival was 88 percent for the 181 patients whose treatment included mechlorethamine. It was 75 percent for the 40 patients who received cyclophosphamide instead. The difference led researchers to stop enrolling new patients in the trials.
"We can think of no credible explanation for this dramatic difference in event-free survival other than the drug substitution," the researchers noted. The analysis found that, as a group, patients who received cyclophosphamide had fewer unfavorable symptoms and were more likely to have intermediate-risk, rather than high-risk Hodgkin lymphoma. The patients ranged in age from 3 to 21. Half were age 14 or younger.
Patients who relapsed received additional therapy. Researchers said it is too soon to know if these patients will have the same long-term survival rates as those whose did not relapse. The additional treatment included intensive chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant using the patient's own blood-producing stem cells.

Given the advent of the EOS 5D Mark III, it's hardly a surprise to see that the Mark II has been quietly moved to Canon's retired list. The full-frame DSLR was famous for its HD video prowess and was quickly adopted by Hollywood, where it was used to film an entire episode of House back in 2010. While the spirit of the 5D lives on in the latest revision, the old dog most definitely deserves a toast 'round the fire.

DUSHANBE (Reuters) - Tajikistan blocked access to more than 100 websites on Tuesday, in what a government source said was a dress rehearsal for a crackdown on online dissent before next year's election when President Imomali Rakhmon will again run for office.
Rakhmon, a 60-year-old former head of a Soviet cotton farm, has ruled the impoverished Central Asian nation of 7.5 million for 20 years. He has overseen constitutional amendments that allow him to seek a new seven-year term in November 2013.
The Internet remains the main platform where Tajiks can air grievances and criticize government policies at a time when the circulation of local newspapers is tiny and television is tightly controlled by the state.
Tajikistan's state communications service blocked 131 local and foreign Internet sites "for technical and maintenance works".
"Most probably, these works will be over in a week," Tatyana Kholmurodova, deputy head of the service, told Reuters. She declined to give the reason for the work, which cover even some sites with servers located abroad.
The blocked resources included Russia's popular social networking sites www.my.mail.ru and VKontakte (www.vk.com), as well as Tajik news site TJKnews.com and several local blogs.
"The government has ordered the communications service to test their ability to block dozens of sites at once, should such a need arise," a senior government official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
"It is all about November 2013," he said, in a clear reference to the presidential election.
Other blocked websites included a Ukrainian soccer site, a Tajik rap music site, several local video-sharing sites and a pornography site.
VOLATILE NATION
Predominantly Muslim Tajikistan, which lies on a major transit route for Afghan drugs to Europe and Russia, remains volatile after a 1992-97 civil war in which Rakhmon's Moscow-backed secular government clashed with Islamist guerrillas.
Rakhmon justifies his authoritarian methods by saying he wants to oppose radical Islam. But some of his critics argue repression and poverty push many young Tajiks to embrace it.
Tighter Internet controls echo measures taken by other former Soviet republics of Central Asia, where authoritarian rulers are wary of the role social media played in revolutions in the Arab world and mass protests in Russia.
The government this year set up a volunteer-run body to monitor Internet use and reprimand those who openly criticize Rakhmon and other officials.
In November, Tajikistan blocked access to Facebook, saying it was spreading "mud and slander" about its veteran leader.
The authorities unblocked Facebook after concern was expressed by the United States and European Union, the main providers of humanitarian aid for Tajikistan, where almost a half of the population lives in abject poverty.
Asomiddin Asoyev, head of Tajikistan's association of Internet providers, said authorities were trying to create an illusion that there were no problems in Tajik society by silencing online criticism.
"This is self-deception," he told Reuters. "The best way of resolving a problem is its open discussion with civil society."
Moscow-based Central Asia expert Arkady Dubnov told Reuters that Rakhmon's authoritarian measures could lead to a backlash against the president in the election. "Trying to position itself as the main guarantor of stability through repression against Islamist activists, the Dushanbe government is actually achieving the reverse - people's trust in it is falling," he said.

Who: Belle Pente Winery and Vineyard (Pente rhymes with ?want?)
?
What: Swapping High Tech for Low Tech and PCs for Pinots
?
Where: Yamhill-Carlton AVA (Willamette Valley), Oregon
?
Why: Because 20 years ago, Jill and Brian O?Donnell packed up their techy lives in Silicon Valley and trooped north to make Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gamay?and Chardonnay in the then-still-emerging Willamette Valley. Because they?ve never looked back ? and though they?re technically transplants, today their connection to their land runs deeper than that of many who?ve lived in the area forever.
?
Because they practice organic and biodynamic agriculture: cows, chickens, sheep and bees wander the property, grazing in the vineyard, weeding and fertilizing.
?
And because Belle Pente is a family affair. After a long day of processing fruit during the harvest, the whole crew sits down together at the O?Donnell household for a family style dinner cooked by Jill and her Aunt Verle, with wines from Brian?s cellar rounding out the evening.
?
When: Around a large table stacked with home cooking and surrounded by friends. If you?re drinking the Pinot Noir, cook up some salmon or Dungeness crab lasagna; if you?re seated with the estate?s Alsatian-style Pinot Gris, don?t be afraid to get a little heavy-handed with the curry.

Bringing your senior loved one home from the hospital or other medical facility requires a number of safety considerations. From the moment they leave their hospital room to the time they get settled in back home, it is imperative that you plan ahead to make sure the transition from hospital to home is free of dangers and as comfortable as possible.
?
Among the first considerations are clothing and footwear for your senior to wear home. Loose comfortable slacks and a button front shirt are usually best as they are easier to slip on. Consider sneakers or low slip-on shoes with steady treads to prevent falls. Also be sure to take the weather into consideration and decide if a jacket and/or hat will be necessary.
?
You senior will likely ride in a wheel chair to the exit and then enter into the vehicle that will deliver him or her home. Make sure to find out how mobile your senior will be so you can arrange for appropriate transportation:
If your loved one will need prescriptions, make arrangements to have those filled and picked up either in advance or by someone else such as an?in-home care companion, so you can take your family member directly home. Likewise, make sure you have restocked the refrigerator and pantry, as well as picked up any special foods or medical supplies, before discharge.
Even before your senior loved one returns home you should take a look around both inside and outside the house to look for hidden dangers.
Outside make sure walkways and stairs are free of debris and swept clean. Also check hand rails to make sure they are steady and free of chips or splinters and remove any door mats that might cause your senior to trip. Lighting is another consideration so be sure all bulbs are in working order and provide enough illumination.
There are many safety considerations inside the house as well:
When your senior loved one comes home he or she may be a bit disoriented. To make help make things clearer for them install large red and blue buttons over hot and cold water faucet controls to prevent dangerous mistakes. A dark green or brown toilet seat and vinyl tape around the shower will make those fixtures more easily distinguishable as well. To make getting up easier, you may also want to consider installing grab bars or a raised toilet seat. And safety devices, such as lock-in switches on stoves and thermostats can prevent burns and fires from occurring.
Returning home from the hospital should be a happy time for your senior loved one. By taking preventative steps, you can help to ensure the return home is safe as well.

Not exactly.
As Catholics and other Christians know well, for his name is on hundreds of their churches, there really was a Saint Nicholas. And he really was a generous gift-giver. But he didn't have all those accoutrements, like the red-and-white outfit, the reindeer and the elves.
So how did Saint Nicholas become Father Christmas?
Adam C. English, associate professor of religion at North Carolina's Campbell University, explores that question and much more in his new book "The Saint Who Would Be Santa Claus: The True Life and Trials of Nicholas of Myra."
In an interview, we talked about the Saint Nicholas of history, the evolution of Santa Claus, and the reasons why a saint from the fourth century can inspire us today.
?
Q: Who was Saint Nicholas in real life?
?
A: The historical Saint Nicholas was born around the late third century or early fourth century. He lived his life in what is now the southwest shores of Turkey. He served as a bishop, a Christian pastor of the church in Myra, doing good works of gift-giving and generosity, serving the people as a true civil servant. There are stories of him bartering with grain ships to get grain to save the starving people of Myra, going to the capitol to appeal for lower taxes, interfering in court cases and saving three men from beheading.
As a young man, he inherits gold from his parents, and he hears of a man in town who's become desperately poor and is thinking about selling off his own daughters. Nicholas bags up some of that gold and throws it through his window. It's used as a dowry for one of the daughters. He returns two times so the other daughters might be able to marry.
?
Q: What did it mean then to sell off one's daughters?
?
A: Prostitution. We have decrees dating back to the early days of the Roman empire trying to curb that activity and try to prevent parents from selling daughters into prostitution and children into slavery.
While it seems inhumane, those options become very live and real when your options are to starve or freeze to death. It gives us a glimpse into some of the hardships of the time.
?
Q: Was he martyred like so many other saints?
A: No. He lives to a ripe old age.
Part of what appeals to people about Nicholas is precisely the ordinariness of his story and his life. Going back to that fourth century, most of the stories were about saints [who] died for the faith, were martyred in grisly ways. Or performed supernatural miracles or spent their lives in the desert as hermits.
He is an ordinary guy, doing ordinary acts of charity and working on behalf of the people. He's a saint to whom people can relate. He becomes the patron saint of sailors and children and unwed women, bakers, brewers and apothecaries, perfumers. Everybody loves Saint Nicholas.
?
Q: He sounds a bit like the apostle Peter, a man who isn't in a sphere above everyone else. Does that sound right?
?
A: Peter is such a relatable saint precisely because he doubts, he denies knowing the Lord, he questions, he has all the failings. He is you and me. We have those same doubts and questions.

One of my favorite activities each year are those related to the Innovation Showcase taking place for the third time at the 2013 Enterprise Connect conference. ?Enterprise telecom isn?t exactly the hotbed of?entrepreneurial?activities, nonetheless there are some real exciting and interesting developments. If you know of any ? tell them to apply ? only four companies will be selected.
Crossposted from NoJitter:
There is no shortage of problems to solve in enterprise communications today. The need to be connected is greater than ever, and what we connect is also rapidly changing. In many cases, it?s new companies that provide the innovative solutions that meet these newly-emerging needs?in categories and use cases that may not even have existed a few years ago: SoMoClo (Social+Mobile+Cloud), or possibly consumer oriented apps that are pivoting into business. New solutions tend to create new opportunities?in areas such as BYOD, big data, and WebRTC.
Today?s enterprise environments are very open to solutions that come from smaller vendors. It?s a culture of ?solve the problem quickly??be it cloud or consumer-grade devices and applications. Also, as the AppStore concept expands to more ecosystems, larger vendors are searching for partners too.
That?s why, once again next year, Enterprise Connect will present the industry?s premier venue for displaying and recognizing innovation driven by small companies. The Enterprise Connect Innovation Showcase is the place to be seen in 2013. The Third Annual Innovation Showcase will recognize up-and-coming innovations in business communications.
We started the Innovation Showcase program because big innovations often come from small companies?companies so small that they might need a little assistance in being noticed by large companies.
That assistance is provided in Innovation Showcase. No more than four companies are selected, invited, and awarded the opportunity to share their story. The selected firms will do a pitch in a session. The showcase is also a designated booth in the exhibit hall?just like the big vendors.
But there?s a sticky detail: Only companies that apply for consideration can be selected. If you know of any great ideas out there, tell the people behind them to apply. All the rules and information are posted?here?at the Enterprise Connect website. The deadline to apply is February 11.
What are we looking for? Basically a new product or service that facilitates business communications and collaboration. It might have to do with voice, video, presence/IM, messaging, conferencing, or something entirely new. Past winners have included tools for mobility, conferencing, collaboration, and more. The product or service can be standalone or potentially an applet that fits into a specific ecosystem. It can solve an old problem, or a problem few realize they even have.
Featured vendors in past Innovation Showcases have included:
*?Fonolo: Web to Contact Center Integration.
*?Harmon.ie: Formalized collaboration thru email.
*?Proton Media: Virtual Avatar conferencing for Lync
*?Radish Systems: Push images to mobiles
*?Hookflash: Real-Time visual communications for LinkedIn on the iPad.
*?Nuvixa: Virtual green-screen using Kinect-like 3D camera (now Personify).
*?Wrike: Cloud based collaboration and task management
*?Vidtel: Cloud-based video conferencing bridge and gateway service.
Which names will be added to the honor roll in 2013?
