Winery Profile: Belle Pente - Trading PCs for Pinots in Willamette ...

Who: Belle Pente Winery and Vineyard (Pente rhymes with ?want?)

?

What: Swapping High Tech for Low Tech and PCs for Pinots

?

Where: Yamhill-Carlton AVA (Willamette Valley), Oregon

?

Why: Because 20 years ago, Jill and Brian O?Donnell packed up their techy lives in Silicon Valley and trooped north to make Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Gamay?and Chardonnay in the then-still-emerging Willamette Valley. Because they?ve never looked back ? and though they?re technically transplants, today their connection to their land runs deeper than that of many who?ve lived in the area forever.

?

Because they practice organic and biodynamic agriculture: cows, chickens, sheep and bees wander the property, grazing in the vineyard, weeding and fertilizing.

?

And because Belle Pente is a family affair. After a long day of processing fruit during the harvest, the whole crew sits down together at the O?Donnell household for a family style dinner cooked by Jill and her Aunt Verle, with wines from Brian?s cellar rounding out the evening.

?

When: Around a large table stacked with home cooking and surrounded by friends. If you?re drinking the Pinot Noir, cook up some salmon or Dungeness crab lasagna; if you?re seated with the estate?s Alsatian-style Pinot Gris, don?t be afraid to get a little heavy-handed with the curry.
