EPA: ?Natural Disasters and Weather Emergencies ? Dealing with ...

Posted on October 30, 2012

As Americans work together to coordinate emergency?response efforts, disaster?relief, and clean-up following Hurricane Sandy, the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) urges you to adhere to federal guidelines in order to protect public health. After the 2011 tornado in Joplin, Missouri, residents and respondents removed a variety of hazardous materials, including 2,600 tons of asbestos.?The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)?s online article ?Natural Disasters and Weather Emergencies ? Dealing with Debris and Damaged Buildings? contains excellent information about handling debris after a disaster.

On Sunday, the White House reported that President Obama signed a state of emergency declaration in the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Rhode Island and New Jersey, which calls for federal aid to supplement the cities? response efforts to the emergency conditions.

ADAO?s thoughts and prayers are with those impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): Natural Disasters and Weather Emergencies -?Dealing with Debris and Damaged Buildings

?Cleanup activities related to returning to homes and businesses after a disaster can pose significant health and environmental challenges. People may be exposed to potentially life-threatening hazards posed by leaking natural gas lines, and carbon monoxide poisoning from using un-vented fuel-burning equipment indoors. During a flood cleanup, failure to remove contaminated materials and to reduce moisture and humidity may present serious long-term health risks from micro-organisms, such as bacteria and mold.

  • General cautions
  • Be aware of possible combustible or explosive gases
  • Open all windows when entering a building
  • Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Avoid problems from
    • Mold, bacteria and insects
    • Use of cleaners, disinfectants, and pesticides
    • Airborne asbestos and lead dust
  • Properly dispose of waste
  • Guidances

EXCERPT FROM EPA DEALING WITH DEBRIS AND DAMAGED BUILDINGS SECTION ON ASBESTOS AND LEAD DUST

Avoid problems from airborne asbestos and lead dust?- Elevated concentrations of airborne asbestos can occur if asbestos-containing materials present in many older homes are disturbed. Pipe or other insulation, ceiling tiles, exterior siding, roof shingles and sprayed on-soundproofing are just some of the materials found in older buildings that may contain asbestos. Buildings constructed before 1970 are more likely to contain asbestos. Airborne asbestos can cause lung cancer and mesothelioma, a cancer of the chest and abdominal linings. Lead is a highly toxic metal which produces a range of adverse health effects, particularly in young children. Many homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint. Disturbance or removal of materials containing lead-based paint may result in elevated concentrations of lead dust in the air.

  • If you know or suspect that your home contains asbestos or lead-based paint and any of these materials have been damaged or will otherwise be disturbed during cleanup,?seek the assistance of public health authorities and try to obtain help from specially trained contractors, if available.
  • If possible, removed materials should be handled while still wet or damp, double bagged and properly labeled as to contents.
  • In handling materials that are believed to be contaminated with asbestos or lead, EPA recommends that,?at a minimum,?you wear gloves, goggles, and most importantly, OSHA-approved respiratory protection, if available.
  • While still wearing a mask, wash hands and clothing after handling such materials.
  • If at all possible, avoid activities that will generate dust, such as sweeping or vacuuming debris that may contain asbestos or lead.
  • Take precautions before your contractor or you begin remodeling or renovations that disturb surfaces that may contain lead-based paint (such as scraping off paint or tearing out walls):
  • Have the area tested for lead-based paint.
  • Do not use a belt-sander, propane torch, heat gun, dry scraper, or dry sandpaper to remove lead-based paint. These actions create large amounts of lead dust and potentially harmful fumes.
  • Temporarily move your family (especially children and pregnant women) out of the apartment or house until the work is done and the area is properly cleaned. If you can?t move your family, at least completely seal off the work area.

Properly dispose of waste?- Caution must be exercised to assure that all waste materials are removed and disposed of properly. Open burning of materials by individuals should be avoided. Improperly controlled burning of materials not only represents significant fire hazards but can also produce additional hazards from the vapors, smoke, and residue that are produced from the burning.?

Opinion: Tribes fight to preserve gaming monopoly in Oregon

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

"I have friends with whom I've shared the same Daily Racing Form at the Rialto in downtown Portland, the same video poker terminals at the Buffalo Gap on Southwest Macadam and the same private poker table at a certain Southeast Portland home who are now dancing on the ruins of the proposed Wood Village casino. They were shocked -- shocked! -- that the backers of Measures 82 and 83 were trying to bring casino gambling to the Portland area. But the battle over these measures, which their sponsors abandoned two weeks ago, wasn't about bringing gambling to Portland. We already have plenty of gaming venues in the tri-county area that are legal and, for the most part, pretty seedy. Just go to PortlandBarFly.com (barflymag.com) for a list of state-contracted video poker establishments that would cost state legislators their jobs if they tried to conduct an on-site audit there. No, the battle over the casino ballot measures was about protecting the balance of monopoly market shares for tribal casinos and the state's video poker industry, which subsidizes bars, restaurants and even strip joints. As happens in campaigns of this kind, facts were shuffled and discarded, but deserve a second look. Let the record show that the Wood Village casino would have generated more revenue for our schools than existing tribal gaming pacts, based on the official estimate of financial impact in the Oregon Voters' Pamphlet. And, if you can trust the Oregon AFL-CIO on this subject, this same casino would have produced more family-wage jobs than our existing gambling establishments." Get the Story:

Guest Post: Foods for Foul Weather | Foodem.com

Reported by foodem.com, the online wholesale food marketplace-

With much of the East Coast hunkered down under cold and rain, I?ve been thinking a lot about the kinds of things we like to eat when it?s ugly outside. Chilly, damp weather always makes my family crave something warm and filling.

Dishes that simmer on their own for a while, like this slow cooker chicken noodle soup recipe, are ideal for a rainy afternoon lunch at home. Some dishes take even longer to cook, and there?s something very rewarding about tossing a pile of ingredients in the crock pot in the morning and coming home to a ready meal. Stews and braises are classic fall food. Slow cooking is a good way to take advantage of inexpensive, tough cuts of meat that have lots of flavor, but there are also plenty of vegetarian dishes that fit the bill as well.

In addition to the all-day stews, there are plenty of quick and easy soup recipes for fall. Nothing else fills you up and warms you from the inside like a bowl of hot vegetable soup with a melty, gooey grilled cheese sandwich. There are also lots of sustainable seafood options in fall, and I find that homemade clam chowder can drive away the worst chill.

For dessert, whip up a batch of mini apple pies. Baked fruit dishes are a great way to use produce that you stored in the warmer months by canning or freezing, and they tend to be quick to make.

Personally, I love to make baked casseroles when the weather is bad. Homemade macaroni and cheese is a crowd-pleaser, as are other old classics like scalloped potatoes.

Of course, not everything that warms you has to be a hearty dish. The right drink can really make the difference between cold and miserable and warm and comfortable. This can be the perfect cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, or something more unique to fall. It?s very easy to make your own spiced apple cider with your favorite seasonal spices ? I like to use cinnamon, black cardamom, and allspice. Nutmeg, cloves, and orange or lemon juice are other possibilities for this great beverage.

If you have to go out into the cold and wet, have something warm and comforting waiting for you back at home. I promise it will make even the worst weather seem like no trouble at all.

Walmart Puts Its Boxee Where Its Mouth Is

By Brian Barrett

Streaming boxes are the future of television; there’s no point arguing it. The question is, who’s going to own it? Until now it’s largely been a two-horse race between Apple TV and Roku. But with Walmart throwing its retail weight behind the scrappy little Boxee TV, this rumble just got a lot more interesting.

How to stay safe during Hurricane Sandy: 7 tips

Fact Sheet

Residents of the mid-Atlantic coast are?hunkering down for what promises to be a punishing, simultaneous blow from Hurricane Sandy and two blasts of winter weather. Forecasters are warning of high winds that could topple trees and damage homes, a storm surge that could flood low-lying coastal areas, and heavy rainfall or even snow that could create dangerous conditions far inland. The violent weather is also likely to down power lines and leave many of the 50 million people in the storm's path without electricity. What's the best way to stay safe? Here, seven key tips:

1. If you're in a danger zone, get out
When a hurricane comes barreling in, the primary safety rule is quite simple: Get out of the way. "We've seen a lot of people unfortunately get injured and even losing lives going out during storms when they don't need to be out there," says Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator Craig Fugate. Those in the storm's path can stay as safe as possible if they "heed the evacuation orders and stay off the road and out of this weather that comes in."

2. Stay inside
Even if you aren't ordered to leave, "stay indoors and avoid the calmed 'eye of the storm' that can pass quickly, leaving you outside at risk," says Ryan Jaslow at CBS News. Most hurricane-related injuries are caused by flying glass and other debris, and you can avoid getting hit if you hunker down in a safe spot, inside and away from windows and doors. When the winds are at their worst, a bathroom or dry basement can provide the best shelter.

3. If you plan to stay put, be prepared
If you're one of the 50 million Americans who could be affected by the storm, you need to get ready, now, even if you're not being advised to leave home, says Jaslow at CBS News. Stock your home with emergency supplies, including five gallons of drinking water per person (enough for three to five days), non-perishable foods, a battery-powered radio and flashlights, extra batteries, a first-aid kit and manual, prescription medicines, baby food, sleeping bags, extra blankets, and other necessities. Also, have important documents handy ? including insurance policies, wills, licenses, and anything "you might need to grab in a pinch."

4. Be careful what you eat
Turn your refrigerator and freezer temperatures to their coldest setting. "When the power goes out, that food in the fridge will last only so long," says ABC News Radio. Once the electricity has been out for four hours or more, "you should throw away any perishable food" you have in the fridge. If your freezer's full, leave it closed and your frozen food should stay safe for 48 hours. If it's only half full, the "safe window" is just 24 hours. And open the door as infrequently as possible, as you let cold air escape every time you open it, "effectively speeding up the clock for when your food might spoil." Use common sense, and toss anything that looks, feels, or smells funny. And always follow the "old rule, 'When in doubt, throw it out.'"

5. Make sure everyday items don't turn dangerous
If you've still got time, you should "trim back trees and shrubbery around your home," says Nashoba Publishing, and get rid of diseased or damaged tree limbs that could be blown down and sent flying by high winds. Clear rain gutters to prevent flooding in the wrong places. And do what you can to prevent items outside your home from being "picked up by strong winds and used as a missile." Make sure storage sheds and kids' playhouses are securely anchored, and bring in loose lawn furniture, hanging plants, trash cans, and other items. If you don't have storm shutters, cover windows with plywood bolted to the surrounding wall.

6. Use your generator wisely
"In a blackout, many view generators as a lifesaver," says ABC News. "But use them improperly, and they can actually put your life in danger." Generators use carbon monoxide, which you can't detect because it's colorless and odorless. Each year, 15,000 people get sent to emergency rooms and 500 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning. "To keep you and those who live with you safe, never use a generator inside your home or garage," even if the windows are open.

7. Listen to people who have been through it
Some of the best tips come from people who have already weathered a monster storm, says Kathleen Koch at CNN. So take note of these helpful pointers from people who lived through Katrina: Open drawers when making a video of your belongings for insurance purposes so you don't miss anything; have a tire plug kit and pliers to pull out nails and other sharp debris to keep you mobile after the storm; text instead of calling to extend your cell phone battery; don't expect safes and safe-deposit boxes to keep your important belongings dry in a flood; and have tarps ready to keep your home dry if wind blows shingles off your roof.

IS launches new ADSL option | IT-Online

Internet Solutions today launched uncapped@work, an uncapped ADSL solution designed for end users who require optimised connectivity at work and uncapped, unshaped connectivity at night for more bandwidth-intensive activities.

For this stage of the product release, the product will be made available to the IS wholesale channel.

?The DSL market has matured significantly,? says Brett Steingo, innovation and technology manager at IS. ?Experienced broadband users are particularly sensitive to product performance and the nature of restrictions placed upon them by shaping and policy enforcement. During work hours, Internet access needs to be optimised for mission-critical services such as e-mail, collaboration, communication tools and access to hosted applications. At night, usage patterns change as end users consume bandwidth-intensive video or music content, engage over social media, perform backups, replicate data or update software.?

Steingo explains that while gamers, power-users, micro and SoHo business users are all constantly scouting the range of consumer and SME solutions to meet their particular requirements, they are often faced with the choice of inadequate performance or excessive costs.

?We have therefore created a service that combines the best of both worlds, as the uncapped@work solution meets the increasing demand for access to business-class services by day, and the ability to continue work or engage in more consumer-focused Internet usage by night.?

The uncapped@work solution achieves this by optimising transactional traffic over bandwidth heavy applications like torrents during peak hours and offering unrestricted usage between midnight and 6:00am. By allocating a dynamic IP address, end users are given the freedom to make use of their own router or modem. Two concurrent connections are also allowed on this service at any time. The service excludes Telkom ADSL line support and rental, and IS fair use policies apply.

?With the launch of IS uncapped@work we are now able to offer end users a business-class service at a highly competitive price,? Steingo says. ?This will enable end users to experience high-quality broadband connectivity without many of the usual limitations.?

Insights into new therapy for rare form of cystic fibrosis

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? Scientists at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto have established that a drug recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat a rare form of cystic fibrosis works in an unconventional way. Their results reveal new possibilities for treating various forms of cystic fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease afflicting about 70,000 people around the world. Cystic fibrosis patients carry a defective gene that disables or destroys its protein product, which normally regulates the transport of ions across cell borders. When that transport is disrupted, the viscosity of the mucus coating certain organs becomes too thick. A characteristic feature of the disease is thick mucus buildup in the air passages, which causes difficulty breathing and recurring infections.

While the FDA approved the drug VX-770 (also known by the trade names Kalydeco and Ivacaftor) to ease breathing in people with cystic fibrosis caused by a particular mutation in the CFTR protein (the acronym is short for cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator), exactly how VX-770 worked in those patients was unknown.

Scientists have understood for some time that normal CFTR regulation requires modification of the protein and binding of a small, energy-providing molecule -- adenosine triphosphate, or ATP. But, in their recent Journal of Biological Chemistry "Paper of the Week," Christine Bear and colleagues report that the drug opens both normal and mutant CFTR channels without ATP. Their results indicate that the compound binds to a different site on CTFR than ATP. Significantly, this finding may be useful in developing therapies for cystic fibrosis caused by various CFTR mutations that, like the G551D mutation that was studied, impair ATP-mediated channel regulation.

Bear's group determined how VX-770 works after developing a new experimental system that may have potential for discovering drugs that target the basic defects caused by CFTR mutations, Bear says. The system is useful for identifying compounds that interact with rare mutations such as G551D as well as the major CFTR mutant F508del, she said.

Why a Verbal Agreement Isn't Enough for Estate Planning, Even if ...

We hear a number of stories about supposed verbal agreements made promising money and property to an individual, agreements that rarely holding up in court.? We, personally, see this most often in the probate courts due to the nature of our practice.? When contesting an individuals Will, many people claim that ?he promised me the house would be mine? or ?she said that when she died, I would inherit her retirement account.?? Unfortunately, most of these claims were never documented, and without signed agreements, the judge will rarely agree to honor the supposed arrangements.

Such a circumstance happened in the case of actor Marlon Brando.? Brando?s chief assistant and homemaker, Angela Borlaza, filed a lawsuit against his estate claiming that the actor purchased the home she was living in for her but chose to keep it in his name for tax purposes.? She also claims he promised her continued employment in a company he owned.? Borlaza states that she was locked out of Brando?s room in the days before his death in order for his producer and others to coerce his signature on the Will.? This Will gives them the right to develop his Tahitian estate into a tourist them attraction.

Through the lawsuit, Borlaza sought $627,000 (the market value of the Winnetka home she claims Brando bought for her) and $2 million in damages.? However, she settled for only $125,000.

Borlaza continues to insist she was telling the truth and that Brando?s signature on his will is a forgery ? despite handwriting experts saying it was a match.? We may never know what the truth was since Brando never created the proper documents to enforce Borlaza?s claims.? This is a reminder to us all that verbal agreements are not legally binding and need to be enforced with the proper documents.

Nook HD review a highdef tablet with the heart of a reader

Barnes & Noble knows where it stands in the tablet race. Sure, the company has been plugging away at the space since the day the Nook Color made its transformation into a full-fledged tablet, but the Nook, it seems, is rarely mentioned in the same breath as the Kindle Fire or Nexus 7, when discussing low-cost tablets. As such, the company seems to rarely mention its devices without discussing the competition -- Amazon in particular. In fact, at the launch event for the Nook HD and HD+, reps trotted out Kindle Fire HDs at every possible opportunity.

Seeing the two devices side by side, there's no question that Nook trumps the Fire in a number of categories, and the bookseller has gone a ways toward making the Nook HD stand out in a field full of bigger players. For one thing, the device is far more focused on the reading experience than the competition, a fact reflected in both hardware and UI decisions. The company has also taken a more aggressive approach toward marketing the device toward families. The question, then, is whether these features are enough to capture marketshare from the more prominent devices. See how the Nook HD stacks up after the break.

Personal Development ? Start Now or Miss Your Better Life | Healthy ...

Webmaster | October 28, 2012 (5 hours ago) | no comments

Personal Development ? Start Now or Miss Your Better LifePersonal development is the pursuit of learning, developing, honing and mastering the skills that help you become the best that you can, with all that you have.

It is the reaching for, and realizing of your full potential as a human being.

You want to live a full, productive life, but sometimes, you just don?t know where to begin.

There is so much information ?out there? that it can be overwhelming and hard to choose what is right for you.

Depending on your concerns what seems to work for one person, may not necessarily work for you.

There are so many different ideas, strategies, advice and techniques that it?s hard to chose the right one.

One thing, however, is certain. If you want to achieve anything in your life and realise your full potential, you must have some practical and positive skills ? life skills.

In order to excel at work, in a sport or in your relationships, you must acquire and master certain skills. Living your life fully, productively and with enjoyment is no different.

Crucially possessing life skills enables you to deal with the life?s inevitable challenges and adversities more effectively. It reduces your chances of procrastinating, finding yourself getting frustrated and stressed, engaging in addictive behaviours, and experiencing overall despair and hopelessness.

When you have the proper tools and actions at your disposal, you have more control over your life and time making you happier and more confident.

Taking the first steps

Your first step is establishing a firm foundation. That foundation must be ?you?. You need to know who you are, what you want, and what you are capable of. You must then determine which values, goals and principles you will establish to guide your actions.

Learning about and applying essential life skills will help you. It will help you to:

  • know and understand yourself better
  • live life more consciously and deliberately to attain personal satisfaction and fulfilment

The hardest part in dealing with any major challenge is taking the first step, however once you do, there is a surprising positive and snowball effect. You will begin to feel good about what you?re doing and you?ll want to take further steps. You will want to keep improving yourself and to become the very best that you can be.

Your continuing journey of personal development will make you aware that there is so much more knowledge and information to be discovered, and uncovered, than you ever thought possible ? knowledge about yourself, knowledge about others, knowledge about life and the world around you.

A fantastic life experience controlled by you, if you make a start.Personal development is about wanting and pursuing new experiences, knowledge and excellent relationships. Nothing should be left out in your pursuit of finding your future self and life fulfilment.

You desire the best for you and what you want

To support you and encourage you in your pursuit of improvement and in expanding your confidence, I suggest you to read and explore every area of interest that excites you.

Read inspirational quotes, and personal development articles that include helpful tips and actions, as well as other interesting advice.

The good news is that acquiring essential life skills will not only contribute to your personal growth and development, it will make you a more interesting and dynamic individual.

Why are these new skills and experiences essential?

Without them you will always feel that something is missing in your life. What good is all the financial success in the world if you don?t have self-confidence, or know who you really are, what you want, or what you?re doing here?

We?ve all witnessed many outwardly successful and famous people who have not been able to find personal happiness. No amount of fame or fortune could fill the void they felt inside.

Your steps to achieve more of your development potential confirm that it is important to follow a plan that includes actions to:

Develop a healthy self esteem by:

  • Start from where you are right now
  • Knowing yourself
  • Learn to love yourself
  • Always be true to yourself
  • Develop a personal value system
  • Keeping an honest perspective on life
  • Keep an open mind
  • Develop and keep a sense of humour
  • Show resilience
  • Accept the reality of your situation and the world.

Use your time effectively:

  • Don?t procrastinate
  • Develop clear realistic and personal goals
  • Have a daily priority plan
  • Make time for you and your family, friends
  • Find a hobby or pastime and enjoy it
  • Work to minimise your experience of stress

Fill any idle time with useful action:

  • Make money at home ? internet ? home tasks
  • Take affordable and enjoyable holidays
  • Undertake DIY projects
  • Enjoy gardening even if it just a window box
  • Take on board a hobby that brings you in contact with others
  • Make new friends by joining local social groups
  • Start a course of learning something that you will enjoy
  • Your health is vital so do exercise, (within the limits of your current ability) diet or join a health club
  • Develop new relationships even use Dating opportunities

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Sunday that the storm taking aim at the East Coast is a "serious and big storm" that will be slow-moving and might take time to clear up. The government would "respond big and respond fast" after it hits, he said.

Obama met with federal emergency officials for an update on the storm's path and the danger it poses to the Middle Atlantic States and New England.

"My main message to everybody involved is that we have to take this seriously," Obama said. He urged people to "listen to your local officials."

The president said emergency officials were confident that staging for the storm was in place.

Hurricane Sandy was expected to hit the East Coast late Monday, then combine with two winter weather systems as it moves inland, creating a hybrid superstorm. At least four battleground states are likely to be hit: New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

Obama traveled the nearly three miles from the White House to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's headquarters in his motorcade. He made the comments after a briefing by agency officials that was led by FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. The group participated in a conference call with governors in states in the storm's path, including Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York. The president also spoke with mayors from Washington, Newark, N.J., Baltimore and Philadelphia.

As part of the briefing, the president also met with FEMA workers and thanked them.

"My message to the governors as well as to the mayors is anything they need, we will be there, and we will cut through red tape. We are not going to get bogged down with a lot of rules," he said. "We want to make sure we are anticipating and leaning forward into making sure that we have the best possible response to what is going to be a big and messy system.

Later Sunday the president was heading to Florida where he's campaigning on Monday.

How sweep it is: Giants finish off Tigers

DETROIT (AP) ? Kung Fu Panda, The Freak, The Beard and all their seed-throwing buddies are on top of baseball ? again.

They may be under the radar, unappreciated and unexpected. But they're unassailable, the winner of two World Series titles in the last three years.

Their sweep of the Detroit Tigers, completed Sunday night with a 4-3, 10-inning win, was simply historic.

No National League team had swept a World Series since the 1990 Cincinnati Reds.

No NL team had won twice in a three-year span since the Big Red Machine in 1975-76.

"I'm numb, really, the fact that we've won two World Series in the last three years," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "This will sink in, but right now, I'm kind of speechless on that."

This happens in the NL only slightly more often than appearances of Haley's Comet. They are just the fifth NL team to accomplish the feat since the 1907-08 Chicago Cubs, joining the 1921-22 New York Giants, the St. Louis Cardinals of '44 and '46, the Los Angeles Dodgers of '63 and '65, and that Big Red Machine.

And these Giants did it with small ball, becoming only the fifth big league team ? and the first since the 1982 Cardinals ? to win the title after finishing dead last in home runs during the regular season.

"Our guys had a date with destiny," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said.

Marco Scutaro delivered one more key hit this October, a go-ahead single with two outs in the 10th inning against Phil Coke.

On a night of biting cold, stiff breezes and some rain, the Giants sealed the title when Sergio Romo got Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera to look at strike three for the final out.

"Tonight was a battle," said Giants catcher Buster Posey, the NL batting champion. "And I think tonight was a fitting way for us to end it because those guys played hard. They didn't stop, and it's an unbelievable feeling."

Posey, the only player in the starting lineup when San Francisco win the 2010 clincher at Texas, celebrated with his teammates in the center of the Comerica Park diamond. In the clubhouse, they hoisted the trophy, passed it around and shouted the name of each player who held it.

"World Series champions!" hollered outfielder Hunter Pence, who started the pregame seed-tossing ritual.

Pablo Sandoval, nicknamed Kung Fu Panda, was benched for most of the 2010 Series and then went 8 for 16 this year, including a three-homer performance in Game 1, to win MVP honors.

"I was ready for the moment," he said. "I was waiting for the opportunity to be in the playoffs again."

Cabrera delivered the first big hit for Detroit, interrupting San Francisco's run of dominant pitching with a two-run, wind-blown homer over the right-field wall in the third.

Posey put the Giants ahead 3-2 with a two-run homer in the sixth and Delmon Young hit a tying home run in the bottom half.

San Francisco then won a battle of bullpens.

Ryan Theriot led off the 10th with a single against Phil Coke, moved up on Brandon Crawford's sacrifice and scored on a shallow single by Scutaro, the MVP of the NL championship series. Center fielder Austin Jackson made a throw home, to no avail.

"We were very adamant that we have to step on their throats," Giants pitcher Barry Zito said. "We saw what they did to New York."

Santiago Casilla got one out in the ninth for the win. Romo struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th for his third save of the Series.

The Giants finished the month with seven straight wins and their seventh Series championship. They handed the Tigers their seventh straight World Series loss dating to 2006.

"Obviously, there was no doubt about it," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "It was freaky. I would have never guessed we would have swept the Yankees and I would have never guessed the Giants would have swept us."

The Giants combined for a 1.42 ERA, outscored the Tigers 16-6 and held them to a .159 batting average ? third-lowest in Series history ahead of only the 1966 Baltimore Orioles (.146) and 1966 Dodgers (.142).

"This was the worst day of my career," Tigers catcher Alex Avila said. "They played great, and we didn't. It's that simple."

The NL has won three in a row for the first time in 30 years. San Francisco won six elimination games en route to the title.

Once again, San Francisco took an early lead. Pence hit a one-hop drive over the center-field fence for a double and Brandon Belt tripled off the right-field wall on the next pitch for a 1-0 lead in the second.

The next inning, Cabrera gave the Tigers a reason to think this night might get them back on track to end a title drought dating to 1984.

With two outs and a runner on first, Cabrera lofted an opposite-field fly to right ? off the bat, it looked like a routine out shy of the warning track. But with winds gusting over 25 mph, the ball kept carrying, Pence kept drifting toward the wall and the crowd kept getting louder.

Just like that, it was gone.

Cabrera's homer gave Detroit its first lead of the Series, ended its 20-inning scoreless streak. Trailing for the first time since Game 4 of the NL championship series, Posey and the Giants put a dent in Detroit's optimism. Scutaro led off the sixth with a single and clapped all the way around the bases when Posey sent a shot that sailed just inside the left-field foul pole for a 3-2 lead.

Young, the ALCS MVP against the Yankees, made it 3-all with another opposite-field homer to right, this one a no-doubt drive.

But other Tigers disappointed. Prince Fielder, signed to a $214 million deal last winter, finished 1 for 14 (.071) against the Giants without an RBI. Cabrera, the first Triple Crown winner in 45 years, was 3 for 13 (.231) with three RBIs.

"You just don't get to write your own script," Fielder said.

San Francisco did. The Giants overcame a 2-0 deficit against Cincinnati in the best-of-division series by winning three straight on the road. They overcame a 3-1 hole against defending champion St. Louis in the league championship. And then they became the first champion that hit the fewest home runs in the majors since St. Louis in 1982.

Brian Wilson ? aka The Beard ? missed nearly the entire season. Tim Lincecum ? aka The Freak, was ace of the staff during the 2010 title run. He morphed into a middle reliever who held the Tigers hitless in a pair of outings.

Sandoval said "heart" was the critical ingredient.

"It's amazing what they accomplished," Bochy said. "I think when you look at this club, the terms 'teamwork,' 'team play,' and 'play as a team,' that's used loosely, but these guys truly did. They set aside their own agenda and asked what's best for the club. And we put guys in different roles, nobody ever said a word, complained or anything, and that's the only way it got done."

NOTES: Detroit 2B Omar Infante broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch from Casilla in the ninth. ... Ann Romney, wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was at the game. ... In addition to the bat Sandoval used for his first two homers in the opener, the Hall of Fame received Ryan Vogelsong's jersey from his Game 3 win, Bochy's warm-up jacket, Gregor Blanco's glove, Pence's bat ? named "Tim" ? Scutaro's spikes, Brandon Crawford's cap and Matt Cain's spikes.

A clearer picture of how assassin bugs evolved

Saturday, October 27, 2012

Assassin bugs, so named because these insects lie in ambush for prey that they attack with speed and precision, are found all over the world. Nearly 140 species of these bugs are blood-sucking; because they can bite humans around the mouth, they are also called kissing bugs. All kissing bugs can spread Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease that imposes an economic burden on society.

Surprising, then, that scientists' understanding of the evolutionary history of assassin bugs is riddled with difficulty. The data are incomplete. Fossils, which exist for only a few groups of assassin bugs, are young, providing only patchy information on how these bugs evolved.

Now entomologists at the University of California, Riverside have produced a clearer snapshot of the entire evolutionary history of assassin bugs by integrating molecular, paleontological, behavioral and ecological data into their analyses. The result of their painstaking work is a new phylogeny ? the representation of the evolutionary relationships between species ? for assassin bugs. It includes the most number of assassin bugs to date and represents the most number of subfamilies.

"We can now zoom in on specific groups within the phylogeny to examine specific aspects of the evolution of that group," said Christiane Weirauch, an associate professor of entomology who reconstructed the assassin bug phylogeny with her Ph.D. graduate student Wei Song Hwang. "Our phylogeny significantly improves our knowledge about relationships within assassin bugs and will guide future research work in understanding how some of the interesting prey specialization behaviors and prey capture techniques have evolved."

Study results appeared last month in PLoS ONE.

"One significant improvement is the addition of several assassin bug species from the subfamily Reduviinae, the second largest subfamily of assassin bugs," said Hwang, the first author of the research paper. "Previous phylogenies have a very limited representation of Reduviinae, which means the overall interpretation of the phylogeny is of limited value."

Assassin bugs are estimated to have originated during the Middle Jurassic (~178 million years ago), making them a relatively old group of insects. They diversified significantly in the Late Cretaceous (~97 million years ago); indeed, nearly 90 percent of the existing species diversity we see today in assassin bugs started to diversify from this time onwards. The cause of this diversification remains unknown.

Blood-feeding kissing bugs

Weirauch and Hwang also determined that kissing bugs originated just 27-32 million years ago, the previous estimate being 107 million years ago. Mostly found in Central and South America, these bugs have evolved to feed on vertebrate blood ? lizards, birds, opossums, armadillos, bats, etc., and humans ? and can be found in diverse environments, from the Sonoran desert to the Amazon rainforest.

"The previous estimate of 107 million years ago linked the diversification of kissing bugs with the splitting of South America from Antarctica and provided a longer time-span for kissing bugs to speciate and spread across the continent and adapt," Hwang said. "Our research shows that this is not the case. By including more data and improving estimation methods, our younger estimate of 27-32 million years ago matches the time when the hosts, mainly mammals and birds, were diversifying at a rapid rate in South America."

The researchers caution that as natural environments get altered, more kissing bugs may be seen adapting to new environments and hosts rather than going extinct.

"The colonization of human settlements by wild kissing bugs we are witnessing now is thus likely to increase in intensity as more natural environments are replaced by human activities," Hwang said.

With their comprehensive sampling of assassin bugs and large molecular dataset, Weirauch and Hwang also show that the blood-feeding kissing bugs either have a single origin or two separate but close origins. Until now, the possibility of two separate but close origins of kissing bugs had not been hypothesized nor demonstrated.

"The possibility that there are two separate lineages implies that there will be shared traits among the lineages, but also slight differences we need to be aware of when developing different preventative strategies," Hwang explained. "A single origin, on the other hand, means we can expect common traits shared among all kissing bugs that can be targeted for control or monitoring."

Building the Tree of Life

The current research is part of the scientific endeavor to reconstruct the entire Tree of Life ? the biological concept that all living organisms are related and can be traced back to a single ancestor representing the origin of life on Earth.

"Reconstructing a phylogeny, a framework from which we can infer the evolutionary history of any group of organisms, is thus the first step towards understanding how life evolved, how different species relate to one another, how specific traits evolved over time, and why biodiversity occurs the way it does today," Weirauch said.

Brady, Patriots rout Rams 45-7 at Wembley

LONDON (AP) ? The Patriots showed that old England is their domain as well.

After the Patriots gave up an early 50-yard scoring play, Tom Brady responded by leading five straight touchdown drives Sunday and New England (5-3) ran over the St. Louis Rams 45-7 in the NFL's annual regular-season game at Wembley Stadium.

"I hope they enjoyed the game today, all the fans," Brady said, "I know it got out of hand there, but that's how the Patriots like it. So it was a fun game for us."

Yes, for one night at least, the Pats ? Expats on this occasion? were back to blowing away opponents. According to Brady, though, there's still plenty of room for improvement.

"We've got a long way to go. ... We certainly haven't played our best football yet," he said. "Coach says the season doesn't start until after Thanksgiving, and it isn't even Halloween yet."

This offense is looking quite scary, though.

New England had at least 350 yards of total offense for the 17th straight game, breaking an NFL record set by the Rams in 1999-2000, back when Kurt Warner was leading "The Greatest Show on Turf."

This was arguably the greatest show put on by a team in London since the NFL started staging regular-season games here in 2007 ? or at least the most dominating. New England gave the British crowd a first-hand look at the league's top-ranked offense.

Brady led four straight touchdown drives for a commanding 28-7 lead by halftime, and then hit Brandon Lloyd for a 9-yard score to start the third quarter.

Brady passed for 304 yards with four touchdowns and tight end Rob Gronkowski caught eight passes for 146 yards and two scores. Lloyd also had two touchdown catches, while Stevan Ridley ran for 127 yards and a score as the Patriots put themselves atop the AFC East heading into their off week.

The Rams (3-5), who also will be off, are last in the NFC West after losing two in a row.

The Rams struck first when Sam Bradford hit Chris Givens with a 50-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive of the game ? exactly the kind of statement the team hoped to make to ruffle the favored Patriots.

But St. Louis, which arrived in London on Tuesday, three days before the Patriots, to get better adjusted to the time difference, was the team that looked jetlagged the rest of the way.

"You can't ask for a better start to the game. First time we touched the ball we go down and score," Bradford said. "It just all fell apart from there."

After the Rams took the lead, Brady led a 78-yard drive to tie the score with a 19-yard pass to Lloyd. On their next drive, coach Bill Belichick opted to go for it on fourth down at the 1-yard line, and Shane Vereen broke into the end zone.

It was the only fourth down the Rams forced until the middle of the third quarter, when the Patriots had to settle for a 26-yard field goal to make it 38-7.

In between, Brady hit Gronkowski on a 7-yard touchdown pass and Ridley had another 1-yard run into the end zone 10 seconds before halftime.

Gronkowski celebrated both his touchdowns with theatrical spikes to fire up the crowd, doing a high-stepping strut before the first one to mimic a local tourist attraction. That led to questions about what the move was called, a Changing of the Gronk, a FrankenGronk, or what?

"That was a 'Palace Guard,'" the tight end joked.

Even Brady was a bit perplexed.

"I don't know what the hell he was doing on that first one," Brady said. "I was trying to get out of the way. He needs some work on that."

St. Louis only had one other scoring opportunity in the first half, but botched the snap on a 52-yard field goal attempt.

Givens' touchdown gave him a reception of at least 50 yards for the fifth straight game, a rookie record, but he left temporarily with a toe injury and only managed two more catches after returning. Running back Steven Jackson was also largely shut down, finishing with 23 yards on seven carries. Bradford was 23 of 31 for 205 yards and added an interception in the fourth quarter before being replaced by backup Kellen Clemens near the end.

"It's embarrassing the way we played tonight," Bradford said. "Just embarrassing."

New England became the first team to win two games in London, having beaten Tampa Bay here in 2009. As expected, the Patriots also had the majority of crowd support from the 84,004 fans at Wembley, despite the Rams being the designated home team.

That, however, didn't stop backup quarterback Ryan Mallett from getting booed when taking a knee to run out the clock ? one of the few aspects of the American version of football the British crowd didn't seem to appreciate.

Belichick had no complaints about the atmosphere, though.

"The stadium was great," he said. "Playing on grass is always good. ... It's good to see the jerseys muddy, grass stains. Guys picking up dirt out of their facemasks, stuff like that. We don't see a lot of that back in the States."

NOTES: The Rams had originally agreed to return to London in 2013 and 2014 but pulled out of the deal. ... The NFL will stage two regular-season games in London in 2013 for the first time. ... The Patriots didn't punt until 2:36 left in the third quarter. ... Rams wide receiver Danny Amendola missed his third straight game with a right shoulder injury. ... Flamboyant London Mayor Boris Johnson addressed the crowd before the game, saying he was proud to welcome "this glorious descendant of rugby union football" to Wembley.

Why won't Mitt Romney go on any late night shows?

With nine days to go until Election Day, political satirists are doing everything they can to squeeze every last laugh out of the campaigns, but Mitt Romney refuses to be the butt of anybody's joke. In the past couple of months, the Romney campaign has balked at invitations from practically every single major late night show, invitations that apparently came from very eager, very accommodating producers. (Spoiler: Presidential candidates bring in great ratings.) Most recently, Romney came thisclose to agreeing to do a cameo on Saturday Night Live only to cool on the idea at the very last minute, according to The New York Times. Why so serious, Mitt?

Though his campaign has remained silent about blowing off this invitation along with all the others, Romney actually opened up about his absence on late night TV, when he didn't know the cameras were rolling. We're talking about the infamous "47 percent" video, of course. Talking about his avoiding the stage at SNL, Romney explained, "I did not do that in part because you want to show that you're fun and you're a good person, but you also want to be presidential. And Saturday Night Live has the potential of looking slapstick and not presidential." In the same breath, he said that David Letterman "hates me."

Speaking of presidential, Barack Obama hasn't been the least bit shy about showing his face on late night TV. In the past month or so alone, the president's made appearances on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman and even did a skit called "Slow Jammin' the News" with Jimmy Fallon. Obama's no rogue in his late night campaign stops, either. Both George W. Bush and John McCain both appeared on SNL during their presidential campaigns, with McCain having done the show just three days before the presidential election. Maybe Romney's superstitious?

When you take a step back and think about it, though, this Romney-hates-comedy idea makes total sense. Looking at the debates alone, it's easy to see that the former Massachusetts governor has a bit of a problem sometimes when it comes to saying things that become unintentionally funny, whereas the president seems to have a firmer grasp on his sense of humor. Just compare Romney's accidentally hilarious "binders full of women" comment and with Obama's very intentional, very funny "horses and bayonets" remark. Now just imagine what a cast of the country's most talented improv comedians could do to Mitt and his ambition to appear presidential. Something sidesplitting, we're sure.

David Vitter threatening to fight potential Romney EPA chief | NOLA ...

Washington -- The election is still more than a week away, but already Sen. David Vitter, R-La., is expressing reservations about a potential Environmental Protection Agency administrator or Energy secretary in a possible Romney administration. And Vitter's voice could be significant because he'll be the top Republican on the Senate Environmental and Public Works Committee if Democrats retain the Senate majority and will be in line to become chairman two years later if Republicans retake the majority.

After reports that James Connaughton, who headed the White House Council on Environmental Quality during the George W. Bush administration would be a possible EPA administrator or energy secretary, Vitter told the E&E Reporter he wouldn't be comfortable with him in a position to influence federal environmental and energy policy.

Vitter said his major concern was Connaughton's role in pushing development of an international network of marine protected areas around the Gulf of Mexico, which Vitter considered a threat to "positive commercial activity in the Gulf." The plan fizzled, but Vitter didn't forget Connaughton's role in trying to make it viable.

"It would have had very serious negative consequences for energy, deepwater energy activity in the gulf and for commercial fishermen," Vitter told the E&E Reporter.

Connaughton, now an executive with Constellation Energy in Maryland, couldn't be reached for comment.

11 Tips for ?Tapping Into? Healing for Kids and Teens | Make The Lists

people - happy

EFT Tapping is a positive and unique form of therapy that can be used on your child or teen who suffers from anxiety or emotional problems. These types of concerns are fairly common at this juncture in life and could affect one out of every eight kids. If gone unchecked, these issues can cause difficulty in their family life, with their friends, and at school. The tapping method is quick and easy to master and can help them to overcome physical and emotional issues. The following is some helpful information on how to heal your kids and teens through the tapping method.

What is EFT Tapping?

Watching your child or teen suffer and go through emotional distress can be overwhelming and painful to you, the parent. Emotional and behavioral issues are typically caused by an anxiety, danger or some kind of threat they may be experiencing in life, and it can make children unable to function logically. Tapping works along the same lines as acupuncture but without the use of painful needles. The theory behind?emotional freedom techniques?is based on getting rid of the negative emotions that are in the body and replaces them with positive energy in a matter of minutes.

How Does Tapping Work?

The child or teen can begin by assessing the issue and summarizing the problem at hand. It then gets ranked a level of intensity and how serious the issue seems to them. Before the tapping process begins, positive affirmations are discussed. As the affirmation is being said out loud, the light finger tapping can begin. The various meridian points consist of the inner eyebrow, on the side of the eye, underneath the eye, nose, chin, collarbone and head. As the areas are tapped, positive energy is released and takes over the negative thoughts and feelings.

EFT for Teens and Children

When a problem begins to interfere with the daily life of your child or teen, it is your responsibility as her parent to help her find a resolution to cope with and work through these problems. The EFT tapping technique is simple to learn, and your child can teach herself to do it on her own when she is experiencing a difficult situation or anxious thoughts and feelings in everyday life. Parents can also master this skill and tap along with the child. The EFT method has been known to be a long lasting technique that conquers the issue permanently. It also works better than alternative forms of therapy like hypnosis or medication.
