Toby Keith has surgery, cancels concert

Toby Keith should be as good as he once was in no time. But first, the country-music superstar was forced to cancel Thursday's show in Sparta, Wis., while he recovers from surgery to have his gallbladder removed.

His prognosis is apparently excellent, because he'll pick right back up on Friday at the WE Fest in Detroit Lakes, Minn., according to a message on his website.

Pink, another star with no gallbladder anymore

As for presumably disappointed ticketholders hoping to catch Keith's Live in Overdrive tour this week at Fort McCoy in Sparta, that show has been rescheduled for Aug. 30.

Gretchen Wilson, who was previously scheduled, and other special guests will be performing in Keith's absence Thursday.

A rep for Keith says he's doing fine following today's outpatient procedure -- which he underwent less than 24 hours after rocking the audience at Darien Lake Performing Arts Center in western New York.

Romney praises Polish spirit, creativity in Warsaw

(AP) ? Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney said Tuesday that Poland's economy is a model of small government and free enterprise that other nations should emulate, an unspoken criticism of President Barack Obama's policies in the wake of the worst recession in decades.

Wrapping up an overseas trip, the former Massachusetts governor said that "rather than heeding the false promise" of a government-dominated economy, Poland sought to stimulate innovation, attract investment, expand trade and live within its means" after the Communist era.

He made his remarks as he neared the end of a week-long trip marred by his own stumbles on the world stage.

Before departing Europe to resume his campaign in the United States, Romney also laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier in Warsaw and was paying tribute to the hundreds of thousands of Poles who died in a World War II ghetto uprising against the Nazis. Both are traditional stops for dignitaries visiting Poland.

His speech seemed an attempt to link his overseas trip to the campaign at home.

He said that in his talks on Monday, one unnamed Polish leader "shared with me an economic truth that has been lost on much of the world. 'It is simple. You don't borrow what you cannot pay back,' " said Romney, who frequently criticizes Obama at home for the growth of the U.S. debt over the past four years.

"The world should pay close attention to the transformation of Poland's economy," Romney said. "A march toward economic liberty and smaller government has meant a march toward higher living standards, a strong military that defends liberty at home and abroad, and an important and growing role on the international stage."

While holding Poland up as an economic example, Romney did not mention that the nation's unemployment is measured at 12.4 percent. That is roughly half again as big as the rate of 8.2 percent in the United States.

Romney did not mention Obama by name during his speech, but he frequently accuses the president of failing to understand the importance of the private economy and favoring government solutions to the nation's problems.

Romney resumes his campaign at home with appearances Thursday in Colorado, and already, his aides were eager to turn the voters' attention back to the race against Obama.

The campaign issued an announcement from its headquarters in Boston noting that the announcement of Romney's selection of a vice presidential running mate is getting closer. It unveiled an app for smart phones that it said would "serve as the campaign's first official distribution channel" for the news.

Controversy accompanied the former Massachusetts governor in Poland as in previous stops in Britain and Israel, and comments he made earlier in the trip drew criticism from China.

Xinhua News Agency said Romney's "hawkish remarks" made in Jerusalem could worsen an already tense Mideast situation, or even re-ignite a war between Palestinians and Israelis.

Earlier this week, he declared Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel, even though U.S. policy holds that the city's designation is a matter for negotiations between the Jewish state and the Palestinians. He also sparked a charge of racism from Palestinians when he told donors that the strength of Israel's economy was due in part to the country's culture.

The Republican presidential contender has been highly critical of China throughout his campaign, promising to challenge Beijing's growing influence in East Asia and get tougher with the communist government on its human rights record.

There was some tension between reporters and Romney aides as the campaign looked to Poland as a final opportunity to project the image of a leader ready to stand on the world's stage

The two-day trip to Poland was aimed in part at building support among Polish-American and Catholic voters in the United States.

Poles generally have been skeptical of Obama's "reset" with Russia, and Romney has cited Polish concerns in his criticism of Obama. Some in Poland and the neighboring Czech Republic were upset by the Obama administration's decision to revise the Bush-era missile defense plan for Europe, which included sites in both countries.

In his speech, Romney said of Poland, "At every turn in our history, through wars and crises, through every change in the geopolitical map, we have met as friends and allies. That was true in America's revolutionary War. It was true in the dark days of World War II. And it has been true in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Romney delivered his remarks in a deeply Roman Catholic country that for years has favored Republicans over Democrats. This is partly a legacy of President Ronald Reagan, whose efforts helped bring down communism across Eastern Europe, for which Poles remain grateful.

Poland has been a stalwart U.S. ally and significant contributor to military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Romney met earlier in the day with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. The two men discussed the longstanding ties between the two nations as well as the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan.

"On behalf of our countrymen, I express deep appreciation for your willingness to fight with us, to stand with us, and to be our friends in times of crisis and military conflict," Romney said.

"Poland has excellent ties with the United States, regardless of which American party is in power," Sikorski said. "We remember Ronald Reagan's warm feelings for Poland's Solidarity and also the fact that we joined (NATO) during Bill Clinton's term."

Romney also stopped to view a memorial to Pope John Paul II, who was born in Poland. He then met with President Bronislaw Komorowski.

The candidate ignored shouted questions from reporters about his comments on Israel and the Palestinians. Asked why Romney has taken just three questions from American reporters during this trip, traveling press secretary Rick Gorka said, "Shove it." He later called some journalists to apologize.

Romney's visit, campaign officials said, was at the invitation of Lech Walesa, the Polish labor leader who co-founded the Solidarity movement and served as the country's president during the country's transition out of communism.

Walesa effectively endorsed Romney when the two men met Monday.

But Solidarity, the organization Walesa helped found more than two decades ago, characterized Romney as being hostile to unions and against labor rights. It emphasized that it had no role in organizing the visit and expressed support for American labor organizations

A Diet Rich In Fruits And Vegetables Can Extend Life - The ...

A study of 713 women in their 70s found that those who ate the most fruits and vegetables and got the most exercise were eight times less likely to die over the next five years than participants who ate fewer fruits and vegetables and exercised less. Among participants, those who exercised the most were 74 percent less likely to die over the next five years and those who ate the most fruits and vegetables were 46 percent less likely to die. Combining a diet high in fruits and vegetables with exercise resulted in the greatest likelihood of increasing longevity. And though the study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, doesn?t prove that eating more produce and exercising after the age of 70 will lengthen your lifespan, it does add to numerous studies showing that combining a healthy diet with regular exercise leads to better health at any age. More here.

Match Making Tips: iWebcam To Find Online Relationships: Can ...

Often people will log onto the internet and start dive bombing the big name websites that offer professional match making services. Others are clueless and do random online searches and end up on all kind of fly by night dating sites, spending countless hours browsing fake or embellished profiles.

If this has been you in the past, please don't give up! There's still hope for you yet! In my honest opinion, you can't really get to know someone by reading a profile or browsing through their uploaded photo gallery. The fact of the matter is, the only thing you're learning about a person is by the information they've specifically provided for you to obtain. I have often found that websites that operate in this manner usually just lead to future disappointment. The people aren't really who they say they are, and that is honestly one of the biggest problems I found on those kind of websites. They are who you want them to be.

Instead of taking the before mentioned path and falling into the fray that is online dating, perhaps it's time to take a different approach. Have you ever tried video chatting with someone on your webcam? Do you know how to video chat? Chatting online with others on webcam is the perfect way to actually get to know someone. Not to mention there is virtually no risk and you don't even have to leave your home, although it would be a good idea to look your best. I have had a lot of success with very little disappointment from frequenting iWebcam chat sites. People are generally themselves when you're chatting face to face through video with them.

You'll have ample opportunity to "put them on the spot" and ask a barrage of questions that's pretty much unavoidable without having to compromise your safety. Of course you may stumble across adult oriented chat rooms or other types of chat that you aren't necessarily interested in if you aren't careful. I have certainly tried my share of dating websites and have made countless profiles, only to find that I have wasted my time and will be starting from ground zero once again.

To reiterate, you will most likely have much more success trying a video dating or video chat site opposed to one's that require you to enter multiple search queries at the off chance you'll find "true love".

If you're interested in using iWebcam to meet new singles, you can visit selphie.orgfree.com to give it one more go at finding the person that's right for you. Providing quality reviews, articles and writings on dating online.

Romney voices aggressive stance toward Iran

(AP) ? Mitt Romney would respect an Israeli decision to make a unilateral military strike against Iran aimed at preventing Tehran from obtaining nuclear capability, a top foreign policy adviser said Sunday as he outlined the aggressive posture the Republican presidential candidate will take toward Iran in a speech in Israel later in the day.

Romney has said he has a "zero tolerance" policy toward Iran obtaining the capability to build a nuclear weapon.

"If Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability, the governor would respect that decision," foreign policy adviser Dan Senor told reporters ahead of the speech, planned for late Sunday near Jerusalem's Old City.

Senor said Romney is careful to note the governor believes preventing nuclear "capability" ? not just a nuclear weapon ? is critical.

He later clarified his comments in a written statement, saying: "Gov. Romney believes we should employ any and all measures to dissuade the Iranian regime from its nuclear course, and it is his fervent hope that diplomatic and economic measures will do so. In the final analysis, of course, no option should be excluded."

Democratic U.S. President Barack Obama has also affirmed the right of Israel to defend itself, but in contrast to Romney, Obama has warned of the consequences of an Israeli strike on Iran.

"Already, there is too much loose talk of war," Obama told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in March. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and to sustain the broad international coalition we have built."

Pentagon officials have spoken publicly about the difficulty of such a strike and American officials have expressed concern about the destabilizing effect such military action could have in the region, even if carried out successfully.

Romney, like Obama, believes the option of a U.S. attack should also be "on the table." He has said he will do "the opposite" of what Obama would do in his approach to Israel.

"Make no mistake: the ayatollahs in Tehran are testing our moral defenses. They want to know who will object, and who will look the other way," Romney plans to say later Sunday in a speech in Jerusalem. "My message to the people of Israel and the leaders of Iran is one and the same: I will not look away; and neither will my country."

The Obama administration hasn't ruled out the military option, but Obama has so far been relying on economic sanctions and diplomatic negotiations to discourage Iran from building a nuclear bomb.

For its part, Iran says it is not interested in nuclear weapons and its nuclear program is for peaceful, civilian purposes.

The Israelis are considering a strike because they fear Iran could be moving its nuclear enrichment sites further underground, out of reach of the weapons Israel has available.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday welcomed Romney as "a representative of the United States" and told the Republican presidential candidate he agrees with his approach to the threat of a nuclear Iran.

Netanyahu said he listened to Romney's speech in Reno, Nev., where the likely GOP nominee said that Iran possessing nuclear capability is the greatest danger facing the world.

"Mitt, I couldn't agree with you more," Netanyahu told Romney.

"We have to be honest and say that all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota. And that's why I believe that we need a strong and credible military threat coupled with the sanctions to have a chance to change that situation," Netanyahu said.

Romney's verbal support for unilateral Israeli military action represents a break from Obama administration policy.

Iran's nuclear program has become the most pressing problem for the U.S. and Israel and Republicans have consistently criticized Obama for putting too much pressure on Israel in the peace process and being too weak on Iran.

Obama rejects the criticism, and his aides point to what they call unprecedented U.S.-Israeli security cooperation.

Senor was previewing the speech Romney plans in Jerusalem after he spends the day meeting with Israeli officials.

Over the course of the day, Romney will confront some of the world's most difficult peace and security challenges as he looks to demonstrate to Jewish and evangelical voters back home that he's a better friend to Israel than Obama.

Romney faces high stakes as he begins his talks with top Israeli officials and meets with the Palestinian prime minister. Mindful of polls back home that show a tight presidential contest, the former one-term Massachusetts governor is looking to burnish his foreign policy credentials and prove his mettle as a possible commander in chief.

The trip is a chance for Romney to draw implicit contrasts with Obama and demonstrate how he would lead America on the world stage.

But Romney arrived in Jerusalem Saturday night after a difficult few days in Britain, where he made the mistake of criticizing the country's Olympic Games and raised the hackles of his hosts. The gaffe undermined the stated goal of his weeklong journey through Britain, Israel and Poland: emphasizing America's ties with longstanding allies.

Romney has pledged not to criticize Obama while on foreign soil, honoring longstanding American tradition of leaving politics at the water's edge. But his aide's announcement of Romney's willingness to express support for an Israeli strike while in Jerusalem represents an effort to contrast the two presidential opponents.

In addition to Netanyahu, Romney met with other Israeli officials and will also sit down with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

"Like you we are very concerned about the development of nuclear capabilities on the part of Iran and feel it is unacceptable for Iran to become a nuclear armed nation," Romney said at a meeting with Israeli President Shimon Peres. "The threat it would pose to Israel, the region and the world is incomparable and unacceptable."

Romney planned to spend the evening dining at Netanyahu's home ? the Israeli leader invited Romney and his wife to break the fast for the Jewish holiday Tisha B'Av. The holy day, celebrated Sunday, commemorates the destruction of two temples in Jerusalem.

Romney and Netanyahu have known each other since both were young businessmen at Boston Consulting Group in the 1970s.

While Romney is left to implicit contrasts with his Democratic opponent, Obama has been focusing on Israel, signing legislation on Friday increasing military and civilian ties between the U.S. and Israel. And he authorized the release of an additional $70 million in military aid for Israel, a previously announced move that appeared timed to Romney's trip.

Senate panel debates living spaces for egg-layers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The freedom of a hen to move around freely became an issue of congressional concern as a Senate committee discussed legislation to set national standards for the treatment of egg-laying hens.

The debate over how much space hens should have in their coops has drawn the attention of other livestock producers who fear that they'll be a target of animal welfare advocates. It has also become a states' rights issue as some states try to impose tougher standards on eggs coming from other states.

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California told the Senate Agriculture Committee that her bill to set national standards would increase the size of henhouses and require egg labeling so consumers will know how the hens were raised.

New Mars rover hunts for life by 'cooking' rocks

The recipe for seeking habitability on the Red Planet using NASA's next rover will start with a pinch of Mars ? either a few grains of soil or a wisp of atmosphere.

Scientists will then follow a simple recipe: Place the Martian bit into the rover's Sample Analysis of Mars (SAM) instrument, cook to up to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit (980 degrees Celsius), then measure the result.

The new rover, Curiosity, is the centerpiece of the Mars Science Laboratory Mission, which launched in November 2011 and is due to land on Mars Aug. 6. The $2.5 billion project is aiming to learn whether Mars is, or ever was, hospitable to life.

NASA tried an experiment similar to SAM almost 40 years ago on its Viking Mars landers, and the results are still being debated today. For example, the landers' discovery of chlorine compounds in the soil was initially believed to be cleaning fluid contamination, but a 2011 study hypothesized these could have been leftovers of organic life.?

SAM, says NASA, will produce far more precise results.

"The surface experiments on Viking were designed to do a home-run-swing-for-the-fences life detection experiment," said Ashwin Vasavada, MSL's deputy project scientist. "SAM is significantly more capable than Viking ... it can find much smaller molecules and it can detect things more sensitively." [11 Amazing Things NASA's Huge Mars Rover Can Do]

The microwave-size experiment package, wedged in the front of the Mini Cooper-size rover, is so complex that NASA considers SAM itself more complicated than many of its spacecraft.

Samples inside the package must first be "cooked" in an oven, then analyzed using instruments commonly found on the shelf of respectable scientific laboratories on Earth.

"Different constituents in that sample will break down at different temperatures and become gas," said Vasavada.

Clay, Vasavada said as an example, begins to break down at 530 degrees Fahrenheit (277 degrees Celsius). Therefore, a puff of water appearing on a Martian sample cooked to that temperature would imply that it is partly made of clay.

SAM includes a gas chromatograph made up of six different tubes; each one is able to pick up a different kind of compound.

"You flow gas from the samples through fairly long tubes that are specifically designed to separate out the different constituents of the gas," Vasavada said. "You put in a mixture of gases at the beginning of the tube, and by the end of the tube, they're separated out."

SAM also has two kinds of spectrometers for a more precise identification of each sample. The spectrometers can catalog potential life signature gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor. The spectrometers will also measure properties including molecular weight, electrical charges and the amount of light absorbed at different wavelengths.

If SAM does spy a potential organic, it will aim to determine if it's actually from Mars, or hitchhiking strays from Earth contaminating the sample collector.

Stashed on the front of Curiosity, underneath foil covers, are five ceramic blocks spiked with artificial organic compounds. The rover will drill into the block and cook a sample from it. If organics pop up that weren't supposed to be in the block, researchers will more likely rule that the organics found on Mars were stowaways.

By contrast, if the sample comes back pure, researchers can then focus on identifying clues as to where the organics came from. It will be hard for NASA to definitively say if an organic is of biological origin or not, but they say the research they do with MSL will help guide future missions.

Considered the workhorse of MSL, SAM is one of the main reasons the mission came about in the first place, mission planners say.

"We don't like to have favorite instruments," Vasavada said, "but if you trace back why we were flying this rover, it was to fly a mass spectrometer to Mars."

Use of sunbeds leads to over 3000 cases of melanoma a year in Europe

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? Of 63,942 new cases of cutaneous melanoma (a form of skin cancer) diagnosed each year in Europe an estimated 3,438 (5.4%) are related to sunbed use. Sunbed users are at a 20% increased relative risk of skin cancer compared with those who have never used a sunbed. This risk doubles if they start before the age of 35 and experts warn that "tougher actions" are needed to reduce this risk.

Sun exposure is the most significant environmental cause of skin cancer and sunbeds have become the main non-solar source of UV exposure in Western Europe (UV is the wavelength associated with the occurrence of skin cancer). A study from 2005 found a 75% increased risk of melanoma if sunbed sessions were started during adolescence or early adulthood. But no studies since then have estimated the impact of melanomas (skin cancer tumours) due to sunbeds in Western Europe.

So researchers from the International Prevention Research Institute in France and the European Institute of Oncology in Italy analysed the results of 27 separate studies on skin cancer and sunbed use between 1981 and 2012. Countries included the UK, France and Germany.

The total number of skin cancer cases included in the analysis was 11,428. The authors summarised risk of skin cancer from any sunbed use at 20% which rose to 87% if exposure was before 35 years of age. There was also a 1.8% increase in risk for each additional sunbed session per year.

The authors estimate that from the 63,942 new cases of melanoma diagnosed every year in 18 Western European countries, 3438 and 794 deaths (498 women and 296 men) would be caused by sunbed use.

The authors believe that earlier studies have tended to underestimate the risks of indoor tanning because the use of these devices is relatively new. Furthermore, from 2005 to 2011, most risks have increased. Future studies could therefore demonstrate an even higher risk.

It could be argued that sunbed exposure could be a marker of a more sun exposed population, but figures from Iceland (where sunny days are uncommon) show that after 1990 the incidence of skin cancer increased sharply in young females which decreased in 2000 when authorities imposed greater control on sunbed installation.

The authors conclude that melanoma and other skin cancers associated with sunbed use can be prevented by avoiding exposure to indoor tanning devices. They argue that the sunbed industry has not shown an ability to "self-regulate effectively" but instead give "information intended to deceive consumers." They argue that prevention must be based on "tougher actions" and that tanning under the age of 18 should be restricted and unsupervised tanning salons should be banned -- laws that are already in place in Australia and several Europe countries. In the USA, only the State of California has introduced such a ban.

HBT: Greinke doesn't 'look foward to being traded'

Milwaukee skipping Zack Greinke?s turn in the rotation last week so he could ?recharge his batteries? worked out pretty well, as Greinke returned last night with seven innings of one-run ball in what may be his final Brewers start.

Afterward he declined to discuss the specifics of any contract extension talks, although he did apologize to reporters for doing so and talked pretty openly about his feelings surrounding potentially pitching his last game in a Brewers uniform.

Here?s some of what he said, via Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

It?s kind of fun playing here and we?ve got a lot of good players. We?re just not pulling out wins at the moment, which is disappointing. ? I really don?t want to think about a different team when I?m on this team. ? Obviously something could happen, but I enjoy playing here. I don?t really look forward to being traded from this place, but it could happen. That?s just baseball. I won?t take it personal if it happens. They?ve got to do what they?ve got to do what?s best for the organzation.

Every indication is that the Brewers will trade Greinke by July 31 if they aren?t able to work out a long-term extension and at this point there?s no real indication that extension talks have progressed very far.

Greinke?s next scheduled start is Sunday against the Nationals at Miller Park and the trade deadline is about 48 hours later.

Recalling Srebrenica, U.N's Ban urges action on Syria

SARAJEVO (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on world powers on Wednesday to urgently unite to end the bloodshed in Syria, recalling the inertia of the United Nations in 1995 as genocide occurred in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica.

Wrapping up a week-long tour of the countries carved from old federal Yugoslavia in the 1990s, Ban told the Bosnian parliament he was making a plea to the world.

In Srebrenica, he said, "the United Nations did not live up to its responsibility. The international community failed in preventing the genocide that unfolded. Too many men and boys died in Srebrenica - needlessly, savagely."

"That is why, here in the heart of a healing Bosnia and Herzegovina, I make a plea to the world: do not delay. Come together. Act. Act now to stop the slaughter in Syria."

As he spoke, the Syrian army was turning its forces on the country's second city of Aleppo, pounding rebels with artillery and attack helicopters, opposition activists said, in the 16th month of an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

The U.N. Security Council, divided between Western powers on one side and Russia and China on the other, has proved helpless in halting a conflict in which activists say at least 18,000 people have been killed.

Around 100,000 died in Bosnia's 1992-95 war, as divided world powers flinched at intervening in what they saw as a complex ethnic conflict.

They only acted in the wake of the July 1995 massacre in Srebrenica, when Dutch U.N. peacekeepers abandoned what had been designated a U.N. safe haven to advancing Bosnian Serb forces, who killed 8,000 Muslim men and boys and bulldozed their corpses into pits.

The U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague said the crime, the worst massacre on European soil since World War Two, constituted genocide. Bosnia remains deeply divided, still scarred by ethnic cleansing.

"The United Nations is doing all that we can," Ban said of its efforts in Syria. "But action - meaningful action - will take the concerted efforts of the international community. Without unity, there will be more bloodshed. Without unity, more innocents will die."

Senate passes Democratic tax plan, likely to fail in House

Senate Leaders Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell (J. Scott Applewhite/AP)Democrats and Republicans conducted an exercise in political theater Wednesday by holding Senate votes on their competing tax proposals, even though both appeared destined for failure.

The Democratic bill--which extends tax cuts through 2013 for all individuals except those who jointly earn over $250,000, passed in the Democratic-controlled Senate by a vote of 51 to 48. The bill saved Democrats the embarrassment of having a measure supported by the president fail in the chamber they control, but the bill has virtually no hope of passage in the Republican-controlled House.

The Republican bill, which extended tax cuts for all individuals, earlier failed by a vote of 45 to 54.

"We're in the middle of a partisan war all welled up in the crucible of an election year for president, and as a result, we're gonna have two tax votes today that don't pass," Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida said on the Senate floor prior to the vote.

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky lamented that the GOP bill would fail, but added during his Senate floor speech that the "good news" is "this new convoluted Democratic bill will never make it to the president's desk."

Republicans argued the Democratic bill extended death or inheritance taxes and raised taxes on small businesses, as well as raising taxes on the wealthiest earners. Democrats said the Republican bill failed to protect the middle class and shielded the wealthy.

Today's votes leave Congress in the same position as when it began--pressed to agree on a way to extend these 2001 and 2003 tax cuts before they expire in Jan. 2013.

The Democratic bill's passage fuels the party's talking points on the subject of middle class tax cuts. "With the Senate's vote, the House Republicans are now the only people left in Washington holding hostage the middle-class tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans and nearly every small business owner," President Barack Obama said in a statement following the vote. That sentiment was publicly repeated by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) and other Democratic leaders immediately following the vote.

Republicans took up the opposing mantle. "With unemployment still above eight percent, the only vote on taxes that matters to the American people is a vote to stop the small business tax hike the president wants that Ernst & Young says will cost our economy 700,000 jobs," House Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) said in a statement. "The House will vote next week to stop that tax hike, and until the Senate does the same, the threat to our economy remains."

Democrats enraged Republicans this month by announcing their willingness to allow tax cuts and spending provisions to expire if Republicans refuse to raise taxes on the wealthy, potentially inching the country off a "fiscal cliff."
