Scientists develop new approach to support future climate projections

Thursday, November 29, 2012

Scientists have developed a new approach for evaluating past climate sensitivity data to help improve comparison with estimates of long-term climate projections developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The sensitivity of global temperature to changes in the Earth's radiation balance (climate sensitivity) is a key factor for understanding past natural climate changes as well as potential future climate change.

Many palaeoclimate studies have measured natural climate changes to calculate climate sensitivity, but a lack of consistent methodologies produced a wide range of estimates as to the exact value of climate sensitivity, which hindered results.

Now a team of international scientists including Eelco Rohling, Professor of Ocean and Climate Change at the University of Southampton, have developed a more consistent definition of climate sensitivity in prehistoric times. When the scientists evaluated previously published estimates for climate sensitivity from a variety of geological episodes over the past 65 million years, they found that the estimates varied over a very wide range of values, with some very high values among them (high values would imply a very strong temperature response to a change in radiative forcing, for example, due to CO2 increase).

The team discovered that this wide range was almost entirely due to the fact that different researchers used different definitions.

Professor Rohling, who is currently based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton but will join the Australian National University next year, says: "Consistent intercomparison is a top priority, because it is central to using past climate sensitivity estimates in assessing the credibility of future climate projections.

"Once we had developed the framework and we had elaborated all the different assumptions and uncertainties, we applied it to climate reconstruction data from the last 65 million years. This caused a much narrower range of estimates, and this range was now defined in such a way that we could directly compare it with estimates in the IPCC assessment for their longer-term (several centuries) outlook."

The scientists found that the likely range of climate sensitivity consistently has been of the order of 2.2 to 4.8 degrees C per doubling of CO2, which closely agrees with the IPCC estimates.

Professor Rohling adds: "Our study only documents what the climate sensitivity has been over the last 65 million years, and how realistic the estimates of the IPCC are in that context. It finds that those estimates are fully coherent with what nature has done in the (natural) past before human-based effects. Hence, it strongly endorses the IPCC's long-term climate projections based on such values: nature shows us it always has, and so likely will again, respond in a way close to what the models suggest, as far as warming is concerned."

###

The research stems from a three-day Academy Colloquium attended by about 40 internationally renowned specialists in past and present climate studies, held at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in Amsterdam last year.

The findings are published in the latest edition of the journal Nature.

Scott Beason, sponsor of Alabama immigration law, disappointed by ...

"I don't think being soft on illegal immigration gains the GOP any votes," said Beason

Alabama Sen. Scott Beason said he was disappointed that Alabama today lost its appeal for a rehearing, meaning Alabama will not be allowed to check the immigration status of students.

"Unfortunately, the states seem to be left at the mercy of whatever the federal government is trying to do," said Beason, who sponsored Alabama's 72-page immigration law.

Today's ruling largely ends initial efforts to enforce what has been considered the nation's toughest anti-immigration act. Much of the law remains unenforceable, having been blocked by federal courts.

"The law of the land is not being followed," said Beason, R-Gardendale, who also appears to be nearing the end of what he called an "exciting ride" in the national spotlight.

"Where we go from here is an interesting question," said Beason of state immigration law. "I'm looking at every option we may have."

But since President Obama won re-election with the support of 70 percent of Latino voters, national GOP lawmakers have been backing away from tough immigration policies, such as the models in Alabama and Arizona.

Today two Republicans, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas, and Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, introduced the ACHIEVE Act, a modified version of the DREAM Act. The new bill creates a pathway to legal status for undocumented children.

"I don't think being soft on illegal immigration gains the GOP any votes," said Beason, calling the national GOP efforts wrong and "just throwing darts" to appeal to voters.

He said at one point last year, as he was receiving calls from across the country, he found that many who had come to the country legally supported his efforts. He said that illegal immigration provides cheap labor that suppresses wages for Alabama citizens. And he said the issue still needs to be addressed.

But in the end, federal judges blocked most of his legislation. Illegal immigrants can not be stopped from entering into contracts. It's not illegal to rent to or give a ride to an undocumented immigrant. Schools do not need to inquire into immigration status of students.

Perhaps the most controversial section survived repeated challenges. Local and state police in Alabama and Arizona can inquire into immigration status during traffic stops. Also, businesses can be required to use a federal database to verify the immigration status of employees.

Beason said Congress needs to secure the border before tackling immigration reform. He said that may entail a fence or may mean better enforcement of existing laws. "It's like a plumbing problem," he said. "Until you fix the leak you don't do repairs on the house."

Despite legal setbacks and much national press, Beason said Alabama's experiment was not detrimental to the state's reputation. In encouraging immigrants to "self-deport," which was also the official policy of presidential nominee Mitt Romney, Alabama was repeatedly portrayed as cruel and intolerant, Beason acknowledged. But he said the arguments were based in partisan politics.

"I think that's just what some people who sit in ivory towers in some newspapers like to say," said Beason, pointing out that few national news outlets reported "whining stories" about Alabama failing to remove racist language from the state constitution this month. He said that was because Democratic groups here opposed the removal.

He said the immigration law did not interfere with Alabama's efforts to land foreign businesses, including Airbus. He contends the "bellyaching and moaning" over the Alabama law was a Democratic effort at the national level used to drive a wedge between wings of the Republican party.

Beason, who lost a bid to step up to Congress earlier this year, said he stands by efforts to make the state unwelcome to undocumented workers.?

"Some people nationally care about making sure their team is in power" even if some of the policies are identical between the parties, said Beason. "You've got to stand for some sort of principles."

Phils' Ruiz suspended 25 games after positive test

(AP) ? Add catcher to the Philadelphia Phillies' needs this offseason.

All-Star Carlos Ruiz was suspended Tuesday for the first 25 games of next season following a positive test for an amphetamine. The 33-year-old catcher had a career year in 2012, hitting .325 with 16 homers and 68 RBIs in 114 games.

"I am sincerely regretful for my mistake in taking a prohibited stimulant," Ruiz said in a statement issued by the Major League Baseball Players Association. "I apologize to my teammates, the Phillies organization and the Philadelphia fans. I will serve the imposed 25-game suspension to begin the season and I look forward to returning to the field and working toward bringing a championship back to Philadelphia in 2013."

Ruiz will be eligible to participate in spring training, including exhibition games.

"The Phillies fully support Major League Baseball's drug program," the team said. "We are disappointed by the news of this violation of the program. We will support Carlos in an appropriate manner and move forward to achieve our goal to play championship-caliber baseball in 2013."

Erik Kratz will likely begin the 2013 season as Philadelphia's starting catcher while Ruiz serves his suspension. Kratz, a career minor-leaguer, filled in nicely when he finally got a chance after Ruiz went down with a foot injury. Kratz hit .248, but had nine doubles, nine homers and 26 RBIs in only 141 at-bats. Kratz also threw out 45 percent of base-stealers (15 of 33).

Still, losing Ruiz hurts a lineup that struggled mightily last year. Ruiz moved up from his usual No. 8 spot and took over for an injured Ryan Howard as the team's cleanup hitter for a chunk of the season. He batted fifth after Howard returned in July.

The Phillies, who finished 81-81 after winning five straight NL East titles, have several holes to fill. Only Howard, Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins are certain regulars. Utley, though, didn't play until late May in 2011 and late June in 2012 because of chronic knee injuries.

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. hopes to add a starting center fielder, another starting outfielder and a third baseman either through free agency or trades. Now he'll also need a backup catcher for Kratz for the first month. Brian Schneider served as the team's primary backup the last three seasons, but only batted .212 in 122 games.

The Phillies have two top prospects catching in the minors. Sebastian Valle hit .253 with 17 homers and 58 RBIs in 80 games at Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Tommy Joseph, acquired in the trade that sent Hunter Pence to San Francisco, hit .257 with 11 homers and 48 RBIs for the Giants' and Phillies' Double-A affiliates.

Ruiz became the eighth player suspended this year under the major league testing program, the second for amphetamines following Baltimore shortstop Ryan Adams. The eight suspensions are the most since 2007.

This had to be Ruiz's second positive test for a stimulant. An initial positive for a stimulant does not trigger a suspension, only that the player must undergo follow-up testing.

There have been 102 suspensions this year under the minor league testing program.

Team Building, One Player at a Time - The Program on Negotiation ...

Team Building, One Player at a Time

In late October, the Detroit Tigers were preparing to face off against the San Francisco Giants in Major League Baseball?s World Series. In 2002 and 2003, the Tigers had two of the worst seasons in baseball history, losing a combined 225 games. But through years of calculated decision making and negotiations, team president Dave Dombrowski and his staff rebuilt the team from the ground up, writes Noah Trister of the Associated Press.

Following the disastrous 2002 and 2003 seasons, the Tigers scored what turned out to be a major coup, choosing pitcher Justin Verlander in the MLB draft. According to Trister, Verlander became ?a foundation for everything the team is accomplishing now.? Verlander went on to pitch a complete-game shutout in the 2012 American League Division Series (ALDS) against the Oakland Athletics.

In 2005, Dombrowski brought in a new team manager, Jim Leyland, who took the Tigers all the way to the 2006 World Series, where they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. ?At that time,? reflected Dombrowski, ?you were trying to add talent to get you over the hump and keep you out of the way.?

The 2007 season was a disappointing one for Tigers fans, with the team winning only 88 games. But the franchise made long-term strides, recruiting several soon-to-be key players through the draft and trades. In the most notable deal, Dombrowski traded six players to the Florida Marlins in exchange for ace hitter Miguel Cabrera and pitcher Dontrelle Willis. Speaking of Cabrera, Dombrowski told Trister that the Tigers knew they were ?getting somebody that was an All-Star player, young, and still had his prime ahead of him.? To lock in Cabrera, the Tigers extended his contract through 2015.

2008 was another disappointing season, with Cabrera failing to live up to expectations, but the Tigers did add two more players who would turn out to be long-term assets: catcher Alex Avila and outfielder Andy Dirks. The Tigers improved in the 2009 season but lost the American League (AL) Central title to the Minnesota Twins. That year, in a somewhat risky three-team deal with the New York Yankees and the Arizona Diamondbacks, Dombrowski swapped Tigers fan favorite Curtis Granderson and pitcher Edwin Jackson for four players, including pitcher Max Scherzer and outfielder Austin Jackson. Both players went on to make strong contributions in the 2012 season that helped launch the Tigers into the World Series.

More smart draft picks and trades in 2010 and 2011, including outfielder Delmon Young, helped the Tigers reach the ALCS, which the team lost to the Texas Rangers. Young, the Tigers? designated hitter, went on to be named ALCS?s MVP in 2012.

The Tigers made a bold move in January 2012, signing slugger and first basemen Prince Fielder to a $214 million, 9-year contract. Trister describes the deal as ?the ultimate win-now move ? owner Mike Ilitch opening his wallet to make a run at the World Series title.? As the Tigers competed with the Chicago White Sox to win their division, Dombrowski traded three players for pitcher Anibal Sanchez and second baseman Omar Infante. Both players made key contributions to the Tigers? defeat of the Yankees in the ALCS. As for Cabrera, the Tigers? gamble on him paid off in spades, as he was named the MLB?s first Triple Crown winner (the league leader in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in) in 45 years.

Dombrowski attributed his team?s success to a combination of factors: home-grown talent, free agency, and trades. The personnel decisions and negotiations made by him and his staff also illustrate that, to reach your goals (whether it?s to play in the World Series, acquire a company, or meet sales targets), you may need to engage in a series of negotiations rather than just one.

In his article, ?Which Comes First? How to Handle Linked Negotiations? in the January 2005 issue of the Program on Negotiation?s?Negotiation?newsletter, Harvard Business School professor Michael Wheeler explains how negotiators in all realms succeeded at linked negotiations, or those in which your ultimate success depends on carefully timing and executing a series of negotiations.

Here?s Wheeler?s summary of his advice on managing linked negotiations:

Don?t assume you must nail down one deal before starting the next.

 • Look for hedging opportunities. For instance, if a person sells his current boat before finding a good replacement, he can rent something else for the summer.

Invest most of your effort in the area upon which your ultimate success hinges.

 • Usually one negotiation will have a bigger upside than the other.

Craft a strategy that allows you to adapt as the process unfolds.

 • If you?ve done your homework carefully, you?ll be better prepared to grab opportunities that you might not have foreseen.

(AP) ? The fire alarm: Waved off by managers. An exit door: Locked. The fire extinguishers: Not working and apparently "meant just to impress" inspectors and customers.

That is the picture survivors paint of the garment-factory fire Saturday that killed 112 people who were trapped inside or jumped to their deaths in desperation. For Bangladesh, where such factories commonly ignore safety as they rush to produce for retailers around the world, the tragedy was unusual only in scope: More than 200 people have died in garment-factory fires in the country since 2006.

About 15,000 Bangladeshi workers protested blocks from the gutted fire Monday, demanding justice for the victims and improved safety. Some 200 factories were closed for the day after the protest erupted in Savar, a suburb of Dhaka, the capital.

Protesters blocked a major highway, and some threw stones at factories and smashed vehicles, but there were no arrests and no clashes with police.

Maj. Mohammad Mahbub, fire department operations director, said investigators suspect that a short circuit caused the fire at the factory, which was making T-shirts and polo shirts.

But Mahbub said it was not the fire itself but the lack of safety measures in the eight-story building that made the blaze so deadly.

"Had there been at least one emergency exit through outside the factory, the casualties would have been much lower," he said.

He said firefighters recovered at least 100 bodies from the factory, and 12 more people died at hospitals after jumping from the building to escape the fire.

The government was unable to identify many victims because they were burned beyond recognition; they were buried Monday in a grave outside Dhaka. The government announced that Tuesday will be a day of national mourning, with the national flag flying at half-mast in honor of the dead.

Local media reported that up to 124 people were killed, and that about 100 people injured in the fire were being treated in about a dozen hospitals. Many were hurt as they jumped to escape the flames.

Survivor Mohammad Ripu said Monday that he tried to run out of the building when the fire alarm rang but was stopped.

"Managers told us, 'Nothing happened. The fire alarm had just gone out of order. Go back to work,'" Ripu said. "But we quickly understood that there was a fire. As we again ran for the exit point we found it locked from outside, and it was too late."

Ripu said he jumped from a second-floor window and suffered minor injuries.

Another surviving worker, Yeamin, who uses only one name, said fire extinguishers in the factory didn't work, "So these were meant just to impress the buyers or authority."

TV footage showed a team of investigators finding some unused fire extinguishers inside the factory.

The garment-factory fire was Bangladesh's deadliest in recent memory, but there have been several major factory fires in recent years, including one that killed 63 people in 2006 in southern Chittagong town.

Labor leaders hope outrage over the latest disaster will prompt change. Tahmina Rahman, general secretary of the Bangladesh Garment Workers Federation, says the group wants the government to work harder to punish factories for safety lapses.

"The owners go unpunished and so they don't care about installing enough security facilities," she said. "The owners should be held responsible and sent to jail."

The factory in Saturday's blaze is owned by Tazreen Fashions Ltd., a subsidiary of the Tuba Group that has produced clothing for Wal-Mart, at least in the past. Neither Tazreen nor Tuba Group officials could be reached for comment.

The Tuba Group is a major Bangladeshi garment exporter whose clients include Wal-Mart, Carrefour and IKEA, according to its website. Its factories export garments to the U.S., Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands, among other countries. The Tazreen factory, which opened in 2009 and employed about 1,700 people, made polo shirts, fleece jackets and T-shirts.

Tazreen was given a "high risk" safety rating after a May 16, 2011, audit conducted by an "ethical sourcing" assessor for Wal-Mart, according to a document posted on the Tuba Group's website. It did not specify what led to the rating.

Wal-Mart spokesman Kevin Gardner said online documents indicating an orange or "high risk" assessment after the May 2011 inspection and a yellow or "medium risk" report after an inspection in August 2011 appeared to pertain to the factory. The August 2011 letter said Wal-Mart would conduct another inspection within one year.

Gardner said it was not clear if that inspection had been conducted or whether the factory was still making products for Wal-Mart. If a factory is rated "orange" three times in two years, Wal-Mart won't place any orders for one year. The May 2011 report was the first orange rating for the factory.

"Our thoughts are with the families of the victims of this tragedy," the retailer said in a statement. "While we are trying to determine if the factory has a current relationship with Wal-Mart or one of our suppliers, fire safety is a critically important area of Wal-Mart's factory audit program and we have been working across the apparel industry to improve fire safety education and training in Bangladesh."

In its 2012 Global Responsibility report, Wal-Mart said it ceased working with 49 factories in Bangladesh in 2011 because of fire safety issues, and was working with its supplier factories to phase out production from buildings deemed high risk.

Bangladesh has some 4,000 garment factories, many without proper safety measures. The country annually earns about $20 billion from exports of garment products, mainly to the U.S. and Europe.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association said it would stand by the victims' families and offered 100,000 takas ($1,250) to each of the families of the dead. Tazreen's owner was meeting with representatives of the group Monday afternoon.

"We will discuss what other things we can do for the families of the dead," The association's acting president, Siddiqur Rahman, said Sunday night on Rtv, a private television station. "We are worried about what has happened. We hope to discuss everything in detail in that meeting."

Another fire broke out Monday in a 12-story building housing four garment factories, but the fire department said it was quickly doused and there were no casualties.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- An Indiana University study in the Journal of Child Neurology proposes an innovative treatment for developmental coordination disorder, a potentially debilitating neurological disorder in which the development of a child's fine or gross motor skills, or both, is impaired.

DCD strikes about one in 20 children, predominantly boys, and frequently occurs alongside ADHD, autism spectrum disorders and other better known conditions. Like ADHD, DCD has broad academic, social and emotional impact. It can severely affect reading, spelling and handwriting abilities; and insofar as children with DCD both struggle with and avoid physical activity, it can also lead to problems with self-esteem, obesity and injury.

Severity of the disorder varies, and as the researchers explain, it is sometimes called the "hidden disorder" because of the way those with milder cases develop coping strategies that conceal the disorder, such as using computers to avoid handwriting tasks, and wearing shirts without buttons, or shoes without laces. But children with DCD have been generally thought unable to learn or improve their motor skills.

"The results of this study were remarkable," said lead author Geoffrey Bingham, professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences. "After training the children over a five- to six-week period, one day a week for 20 minutes at a time, the differences between children with DCD and typically developing children were all but obliterated."

Key to the training was a unique technology: a three-dimensional virtual reality device, the PHANTOM Omni from Sensable Technologies, developed for the visualization of knots by topologists, who study geometric forms in space. Holding a stylus attached to a robot, participants in the study developed their fine motor skills by playing a game in which they traced a three-dimensional virtual path in the air, visually represented on a computer screen. Forces such as magnetic attraction and friction can be applied to the path and adjusted so participants could actually feel a surface that changed as the parameters were altered.

The study compared the progress of a group of eight 7- to 8-year-olds with DCD to a group of eight 7- to 8-year-old typically developing children in a three-dimensional tracing game. The task was to push a brightly colored fish along a visible path on a computer screen from the starting location to the finish point while racing a competitor fish.

The training started with the highest level of magnetic attraction, slowest competitor and shortest path. The goal of the training was to allow the children to progress at their own pace through the different combinations and levels of attraction, paths and competitors.

THE CHILDREN'S 'CATCH-22'

As Bingham's collaborator Winona Snapp-Childs, a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, explains, the particular challenge facing children with DCD is a "Catch-22" situation. Children must first be able to approximate a movement by actively generating it themselves before they can improve it through practice and repetition. But because children with DCD have been unable to produce this initial movement, they have been unable to improve their skills.

The technology provided the tool needed to overcome this impasse. It gave both the support needed to produce the movement, as well as the flexibility to let children actively generate the movement themselves. It allowed the children to do what they otherwise could not do: produce the requisite initial movements that could then be practiced to yield quantitative improvements.

The researchers say the technology could potentially be widely accessible: It can be used without a therapist and is portable enough to be put in clinics, classrooms or the home. It can also be adjusted to suit the needs of children across the spectrum of DCD severity.

###

The study, "A Sensorimotor Approach to the Training of Manual Actions in Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder," is appearing on the Journal of Child Neurology Online First. Co-authors are Snapp-Child; and Mark Mon-Williams, Institute of Psychological Sciences, University of Leeds, U.K. Bingham directs the Perception/Action Lab at IU Bloomington.

This work was supported by a grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Need Help Marketing Online? Use These Video Marketing Tips ...

Saturday, November 24th, 2012 at 9:50 am ?

You have approximately ten seconds to get the attention of a viewer. After hooking them, they will be sure to finish watching the video. What can you do to hook them? This will be dependent upon your audience, your niche and the focus of the video.

TIP! You have a small window of time to get attention from viewers. The 15 seconds that start your video must count.

Perhaps you have grown weary of traditional marketing strategies. There are other ways to market that will attract new customers. Do you know what video marketing is? If it isn?t, you should try it. This form of marketing is one of the best methods of reaching out and connecting with others. Read on to discover some great tips to make your video marketing campaign a successful one.

Watch the videos of other businesses before you make your next video. Set aside your professional views on marketing and consider your preferences from the viewpoint of a paying customer. Then take note of the reasons you feel that way about the product. Have your family and friends do the same thing. Use this information to make a successful video.

TIP! Don?t expect to post a video on YouTube and have the whole world watch it instantly. You must market it via your website, emails to loved ones, and your social media sites.

Be open to new ideas. It is important that you stand apart from the masses. If you are the same as your competitors, you will not stand out or make an impact in your industry. Set yourself apart from the rest of the pack. Ask your customers and friends for some fresh ideas.

Don?t be scared by video marketing. Creating quality videos is easy as long as you have a camera and a good tripod. You can show people how you manufacture products, demonstrate your products, or just talk to them directly.

TIP! Do not ignore the power of YouTube. Start your video marketing campaign here.

There is still work to do even after you?ve set up your transcripts and keywords. Make sure that your content is interesting to the viewer. If you?re not able to do this, you really need to rework your strategy.

Weekly podcasts are another great strategy. Podcasts are a very popular way to find new information out. Do not let this conduit pass you by. A lot of people will want to watch your podcast.

TIP! You shouldn?t insist on your videos being neat and perfect. You needn?t have the latest video equipment in order to have a successful video marketing strategy.

When you are posting marketing videos you want to choose your titles carefully. A relevant and powerful title can help draw viewers to the videos. It?s what gets people to view the video in the first place. Take some time to brainstorm titles that are creative if you want your video marketing to be successful.

Screenshot your website and include it in the video. This allows users to see the setup of your website. Screenshots also can be used when showing a how-to video. Save screenshots from your computer, and use editing software to compile them into your video.

TIP! Don?t forget optimization. As you put your videos on different sites, come up with a separate title and description for them all.

The most popular searched topics on the internet are ?how-to? items. When you make a video tutorial, the people that wish to learn about that skill will seek out videos like yours. This means you?ll always have visitors in your niche. People will be more interested in what you are offering if they think of you as an expert.

When you hear people talk about keeping things real, they also mean in your videos. The more you?re honest and sincere, the more you?ll help people that are viewing to feel comfortable with you. The less you seem like you cannot be trusted, the less people will like your video and probably won?t share it.

TIP! Create longer videos that take your viewers deeper into topics. Short videos can be aimed at a broad audience.

Impart knowledge that you have picked up over the years. You won?t be giving out your secrets, but you can share some behind the scenes stuff. Demonstrate why you are the best in your field by describing your products and how you operate. They will have the desire to learn all about your product.

If you are utilizing video marketing, greet customers in a nice way. Introduce yourself and tell people about what your business is all about. Say goodbye in a friendly way, too.

TIP! Make a video that discusses your business and product. Make free offers that will entice them and show them what they can get if they sign up.

If you have a budget to promote your videos, then choose to have your video show up on related sites. Do not allow your video to be spam. Use surveys to find out which sites your customers visit regularly.

The key to success in video marketing is to share it as widely as possible. Send it to your friends and loved ones. Start a blog on your website about the subject. Spread your link to customers you currently have, through snail mail and through electronic mail. Don?t forget to use social networking sites to get the word out. Tell people!

TIP! As you begin to make more videos, your following will increase. You should always be uploading new videos for your viewers to come back and see.

When you know more about this marketing, you can see all that you can do. You can achieve lots of great results when it comes to growing your customer based through video marketing. This is a good strategy for building your customer base and improving your business.

Keep your messages clear in your videos. Prepare yourself so you do not wander off topic. Make an outline and stick to it. If you can concentrate your efforts on the task at hand, you will find it easier to achieve the desired results.

Get Your Dream Unit Easily with NCF's Adjustable Rate Mortgage ...

Many companies that specialize in home loan services offer low mortgage rates, but not any of them could probably equal the rates that Network Capital Funding offers. The adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) of NCF starts with very low rates that are payable within a certain span of years, depending on the financial capacity of the client. Through the adjustable rate mortgage services of the company, clients are free to choose to pay their loans within 3, 5 or 7 years, or even a decade. After the fixed period chosen by the client ends, the company makes the rate adjustable for the remainder of the term. This is one of the things that set the services of NCF apart from any other home loan institutions. The ARM rates that it offers to its clients are primarily hinged on the current published major index determined by the market flow.

The home loan specialists of the company makes their clients understand how the rates of their mortgage loans are determined, unlike other home loan companies that simply lay down everything without having their clients grasp what everything about the deal is all about. One of the most important things that they educate their clients with is the fact that when the index is low, the rates go down, in the same way that when the index is high, the rate is high. This trend becomes possible only when the mortgage is adjustable.

The ARM services of NCF are considered as among the most valuable home loan services of NCF because it has the capacity to outperform a 30-year fixed rate mortgage in just a span of five months. Over the years, the company has established that such scenarios could actually happen, and they can be attested by its past clients who benefitted from ARM as well.

Network Capital Funding makes people understand that adjustable rate mortgage is more advantageous than getting a loan with a fixed rate mortgage, though the latter can be good for a start-up. The specialists of the company convince their clients to avail of the loyalty programs that it makes available to help them get rid of high closing costs. Also, they educate them about the importance of taking advantage of lower rates without having to refinance. Through the help of this company, many people are able to have the financial security as they avail of their chosen home units.

Better blood transfusions for preterm babies

ScienceDaily (Nov. 22, 2012) ? Results of new research from the University of Adelaide are a promising step forward in helping to improve the quality of life-saving blood transfusions for preterm babies, by reducing the likelihood of adverse inflammatory responses to the blood.

Blood transfusions are among the most common medical procedures experienced by preterm babies, who are often anemic and suffer blood loss.

Researchers from the University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute studied 28 preterm babies (at 28 weeks' gestation or less) who were given packed red blood cell transfusions. The results of this study are now published in the journal Pediatric Research.

"Blood transfusions are a safe and life-saving medical procedure -- they are an important part of modern-day medical care," says the lead author, Dr Michael Stark from the University of Adelaide's Robinson Institute.

"It has been suggested that blood transfusions themselves may be associated with medical complications that are unrelated to the reason for which the transfusion is given, and we don't really know why that is.

"These associations include bronchopulmonary dysplasia and necrotizing entercolitis, inflammatory conditions that affect the lungs and gut of very preterm babies."

The researchers have found a potential mechanism associated with the inflammatory response in the body.

"Within two to four hours of preterm babies receiving a blood transfusion, we have seen elevated levels of cytokines and chemokines -- signaling cells -- that stimulate inflammatory responses in the body," Dr Stark says.

"We believe that the bioactive components of packed red blood cell transfusions are initiating or amplifying these inflammatory processes in the body.

"We hope that by better understanding how the body responds to the blood, we can make improvements to blood transfusions that will reduce the likelihood of inflammatory responses. In this way, the patient will benefit from a life-saving procedure and also experience less complications as a result of that procedure.

"More research is now needed to determine exactly how this response is triggered, and how we might be able to prevent it," he says.

Keep Pets Safe On Thanksgiving ? CBS Detroit

(Photo: Michigan Humane Society)

(Photo: Michigan Humane Society)

DETROIT (CBS Detroit)? While the sights and smells of Thanksgiving ? with its roasted turkeys, garlic mashed potatoes and endless desserts ? may be a sweet day for you, it could spell disaster for your most vulnerable family member.

Local?veterinarians?and the Michigan Humane Society are urging people to practice caution over Thanksgiving ?as many of the items prepared for humans to feast on may pose serious problems to their furry and feathered best friends.

During the holidays, emergency vets see a significant uptick in pet-related emergencies, many of which are avoidable, according to?BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Ann Arbor.

?Every year we see an increase in emergency cases during the holiday season, many of which are avoidable,? said Dr. Marcia Backstrom, an emergency doctor with BluePearl. ?While we don?t want to see any emergencies that are preventable, if people do notice their pet exhibiting unusual behavior, we would urge them to get the pet to a veterinarian as soon as possible.?

Backstrom said problems include gastrointestinal irritations with vomiting and diarrhea, pancreatitis from eating foods high in fat, and an increase in animals being struck by vehicles.

But nothing bad has to happen ? by practicing these safety precautions and tips, you can make sure the holidays are as merry as possible.

? Make sure to seal garbage bags and place them in a tightly covered container to prevent your pets from getting into something that could injure them.

? ?Turkey bones, chicken bones and ham bones can splinter and cause the intestinal track to become perforated.

? ? It is best to keep your pets on their normal diets. Many spices and foods that are safe for humans are not safe for animals. Onions, garlic, chocolate, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, the sugar substitute xylitol, and raw or undercooked food can create major problems for pets.

? ? Foods high in fat content can cause pancreatitis in companion animals.

? ? As guests and deliveries come and go, make sure pets remain safely inside. Doors that are left unintentionally open can result in your pet being hit by a car.

? ? Poinsettias are also toxic to pets.

? ? If traveling with pets, make sure they are comfortable. Get them acclimated when they are young by taking them on trips. If needed, herbal remedies or medications can be provided by your veterinarian to assist with calming a pet.

Olympus XZ-1 Digital Camera ? An Objective Review

One curious and true thought about using IM business tools or approaches is success will depend on the skill with which any person brings to the table.

Need a common example? All right, you have probably learned about Olympus XZ-1 Digital Camera and know what is necessary to make it work well. You can take a thousand people all using the same group of methods, and you know what will happen in terms of how well they do.

The mistake that is usually made happens when a person looks at the method and thinks all that is needed is to copy it or use it based on what they have read. What can trip up so many in the beginning is they do not realize the need to have a solid knowledge of different subjects because all we do pulls things from many different bodies of knowledge.

All the greatest business people on the net who started small eventually realized how critical testing all those small parts are for getting the greatest conversions.

The Olympus XZ-1 Digital Camera is a product that many people were eagerly waiting for, as there was quite a bit of pre-release hype surrounding it. Pre-launch press releases stated that if you are a beginning photographer you would find this camera very user-friendly. If you are a photographer with a lot of experience, you will find enough features to get exactly the image you want. This high-grade, small camera has it all. We?ll let you know in this report if the XZ-1 is as good as its pre-release press made it out to be.

The Olympus XZ-1 uses an advanced lens called the iZuiko, which is very fast and efficient. If you find yourself in a situation where the lighting is not very bright, the speed and brightness of this iZukio lens will come to your rescue and give you great low-luminance photos. There is nothing worse than a grainy image, unless that was your intention. Distortion is also an outcome you want to avoid. With the XZ-1 both of these conditions are handled automatically and you end up with great photos. Low-luminance shooting is always perplexing and some cameras just are not up to the challenge. However, with the XZ-1, its Dual Image Stabilization feature makes sure your outcome will be favorable. Digital zoom will crop the image and give you the best possible quality. You will never have a problem taking professional caliber images as soon as you master the features of the XZ-1. As you are going along and working your business, you will learn new ways to promote your offers; so what you need to do is hypothetically apply them to what you do and see if it is viable. A couple of talented associate photographers in sikh wedding photography who built reputation for delivering consistent quality; yet we know there are many who cannot or will not use it for some reason. But you never know, we are sure some just do not have the ambition to grow or add new income streams to what they already have. As it concerns us, we keep our radar up and running at all times because we do not want to miss any chance to capitalize on an opportunity. So in order to do that, what you have to do is scale-up what you are doing and also add new methods. In the end, a long time from now, just be sure you do not look back and wish you would have considered more options. One area where the XZ-1 shines is in the reproduction of color, a pivotal consideration when it comes to any camera. Whether you?re taking a picture of a person, a landscape or a sporting event, you?ll find that the colors are vivid and realistic. Modeling and promotional videos can be made using this camera because skin tones show up well. It takes time but you will discover how to take the most beautiful picture by selecting the correct mode. You will select the correct mode based around whether the subject is a landscape, person, or object and the amount of light available.

While the XZ-1 provides you with everything you need to take quality photos, there are certain accessories you may want, depending on how you plan to use the camera. There is a port for accessories, in which you can connect peripherals which are compatible with this camera. For illustrative purposes, you can plug in either an electronic viewfinder or a microphone adapter.

There are also more unusual accessories you might want to consider. If you enjoy filming things while you are in the water, then you might want to think about purchasing an underwater case designed especially for the XZ-1, which will make it totally waterproof. Because it has Underwater White Balance, the XZ-1 is actually able to take quality pictures under the sea. Then again, you will need to get an Underwater Case if you want to be able to use this.

There is a lot of good logic to select the Olympus XZ-1 if you trying to find a digital camera. On the other hand, you should make up your mind if you are really that into taking good photos that you want to spend the money on this kind of camera. If you desire to have a small digital camera that is simple to operate, then the XZ-1 (minus a few blemishes) is well worthy contemplating over.

We have only discussed three aspects on Digital Camera in your web business, and to be sure there is much more to the story you need to learn on your own. Our attitudes always have a tremendous impact on what we achieve, and that is no less true when you are in business.
