Chinese city leaders converge with European business and government innovators in Brussels

BRUSSELS: A high-level delegation of Chinese city representatives visited The Climate Group?s European office in Brussels last month, to exchange and develop green growth opportunities with some of our leading European government and business members.

The aim of the trip was to provide an opportunity for Sino-European cities to share knowledge and experiences on Clean Revolution developments, as well as facilitate real sustainable infrastructure projects in both regions.

The visit is a crucial part of the Regional Leadership for Low Carbon Growth program, a joint initiative of The Climate Group, the Global Energy Basel Foundation and the Overseas Chinese Charity Foundation of China (OCCFC). The program focuses on the economic potential for both regions that project cooperation on clean technology and green capital can provide.

The delegation was made up of 24 members from Lanzhou (the capital city of Gansu Province), Guiyang (the capital city of Guizhou Province), Zhuhai (an industrial city from Guangdong Province) and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

The week-long visit exposed the Chinese city delegation to European sustainable infrastructure projects, and allowed the representatives to introduce similar Chinese projects to the European delegates. The trip included site visits and workshops with European governmental and business partners in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Switzerland, and ended at the?Global Energy Basel 2012 conference.?

During the Brussels meeting, Cedric De Meeus,?Deputy Representative,?Veolia gave presentations on Veolia?s water, waste water and waste management, as well as some of their Chinese projects.?

Sandra Parthie,?Director EU Regulatory Affairs,?Alstom SA then presented the Alstom?s energy management solutions and specific Chinese projects, and Conor Rifle, Head of Cities, CDP introduced CDP's history, program details and new city initiative.

In the afternoon, representatives from the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany), the Basque Region (Spain) and the State of Baden-Wurttemberg (Germany) gave presentations on low carbon city projects to share their good practices and policies with the delegation. Niu Xiangdong, Vice Mayor, Lanzhou Municipal Government, and Ming Pan, Vice Mayor, People's Government of Zhuhai Municipality, showed strong interest in the European regions' experiences.

The delegation also had meetings with Amsterdam Innovation Motor, Philips Lighting, DG Energy and DG Environment from European Commission, Flanders-China Chamber of Commerce, Flanders Clean Association, AFD and Global Energy Basel during the trip.?
