Gun Buyback Event Held At Coney Island Church

In an effort to get illegal guns off the street, another gun buyback event was held Saturday at the Coney Island Gospel Assembly Church on Neptune Avenue.

The event was a joint effort between the Brooklyn District Attorney's office, the New York City Police Department and City Councilman Domenic Recchia Jr.

The Brooklyn District Attorney's office said that 64 total weapons were collected at the event, including 22 revolvers, 22 semi-automatics, 12 rifles and one assault rifle.

Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes said the program has taken more than 2,000 firearms off the streets since 2008.

"If it was up to me, I would have these gun buyback programs no less than every three weeks," Hynes said. "The answer to the question that's always asked, do criminals really return their guns? Well, probably not. But criminals will break into your homes, they'll break into your car, they'll take your gun, and that gun ends up on the street hurting children and other civilians and cops."

Officials offered $200 bank cards for working handguns and assault rifles and $20 for rifles and shotguns, no questions asked.
