Preservation society hopes to restore Monon Theater ... - WLFI.com

MONON, Ind. (WLFI) - For nearly seven decades the Monon Theater showed a number of films in the small town. Fearing the landmark theater may never open again after closing eight years ago, the Monon Civic Preservation Society is trying to buy and restore the theater filled with memories.

"At one time they had a movie playing and some of the people who were in the movie itself came through town and stopped," society member Jim Davis said. "We've had a lot of different events that have taken place that we've reflected on in recent months since we've gotten this going."

Davis said the society is asking the community to help restore the theater. Davis said they're hoping Monon residents and businesses will help with the cost of renovations that could be more than $400,000. Davis said the small town has already renovated parts of its downtown and the theater is the next step.

"To get this town going once again I think the theater is the marquee part of it. People will come in Friday, Saturday and Sunday for movies and hopefully the buildings around it will be open with new businesses," Davis said.

A few of those new businesses could be connected to the theater itself. Davis said the property includes two small stores and an apartment. Plans are to renovate those parcels first and hopefully generate money to work on the theater.

"We're just going to take it step by step and try and get it to a point where some parts of it can be used and by maybe two years from now we can have that marquee going and open up with movies," Davis said.

What may be the most interesting part of the plan is that the theater will not have any full-time employees. It will be ran by volunteers in town, changing every night.
