Obama calls out GOP over lending rates; takes heat over healthcare law

WASHINGTON ? Four years after the start of the global financial crisis, President Barack Obama is blaming Congressional Republicans for not passing legislation that would lower lending rates for millions of people.

Obama proposed the legislation in February.

In his weekly message, the president cited historically low mortgages and pressed Republicans to back housing policies he says would help struggling homeowners refinance their debt and prevent foreclosures.

"Last week, mortgage rates were at historic lows but instead of helping more and more hard-working families take advantage of those rates, congress was away on break,? Obama said. ?Instead of worrying about you, they'd already gone home to worry about their campaigns."

On the Republican side, Arizona congressional candidate Vernon Parker blamed U.S. corporate tax rates for pushing jobs overseas. He says the country needs ?a pro-growth tax code that brings jobs home and keeps jobs here.''

Parker also called for the repeal of Obama's healthcare law.

"We need to do something about the fact that the president's healthcare law is driving up costs, and in the process, making it harder for small businesses to expand and hire," he said.

Parker says he wants to replace the president's healthcare plan with common-sense reforms that protect Americans' access to care and allow them to choose their own doctor all at a lower cost.
